I have mine running on LPG and I know one other person who has there's on LPG. Does that mean I'm in a clique?

Mine is now my daily driver / works van and Camper too :)

87 1.9 Petrol but run it on LPG most of the time.

Figures =

Happy at 75, occasionally let it get to 80 but not often or for long. (this is not because it is out of puff, more as I do not wish to over stress the motor )

Does around 22 MPG on average, more on a relaxed run on main roads.
On LPG this equates to over 40 MPG money wise.
No discernible difference between LPG and Petrol in the engines running.

Has passed the last 5 MOT's first time (we don't have a "smug" emoticon)

However these are 20 to 30 year old vans.
If you are intending to use it for work and cannot afford time off the road there are a couple of points...

If you are lucky and careful with choice, you can get a good, tough reliable vehicle.

or

You can get one that will fail it's MOT on rust and need welding ( £££'s )

Plus the flat 4 engines, if old and not looked after, can fail ( £1000 for a good re-con unit ).

Flat 4 exhaust systems can cost £300 + if needed and must only be removed and fitted by someone who has experience of the job. (or you can do £££'s worth of damage and at the worst can require engine out to replace broken studs)

I have not owned a diesel but, for a works van the 1.9 D types might be a good option. (not the 1.6 = too slow).

I am very happy with mine, both for domestic (camping) and works use.
They do seem to have a stress busting effect when using them.
We own a very nice VW Scirocco too, but I often choose to go out in the van in preference

I would say if you can afford a good one go for it.
If money is tight, buy a T4

If you need any pointers on what to look for when buying, just ask :)

Welcome to here by the way, where you find all you need to know ( and lots you don't need to know too  )

.
