It looks like an AAZ with a TDI block, JX pump and Oettinger chrarge cooler.

Whats the cylinder shape steel thingy that goes along the top of the injectors? Looks like an external brake vacuum possibly?
Its got a lot going on in that engine bay.... (but no oil cooler meeh)

The silvery yoke?
That goes there, that's the mechanical pressure membrane from the turbo. The more pressure, the more fuel . A genuine jx part

Is there a turbo on it? Could someone have put a 1.9d and Just bypassed the intercooler?
P.s. I have run out of tears.

The steel cylinder shape thingy as you call it is the actuator for the JX Turbo, ---------------
On all JX Turbo they sit ontop of the fuel pump, or i should say inline, Thats the Reason why you had to RE-INDEX the AAZ turbo so it would clear the l/h side engine mount--------------------------
A well thought out engine conversion that Jed, not a Botch up, You want to see if you can get that Kraut cooler working,
Your alternator is mabe a Valeo but by the looks of it its a 90amp
Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr-----------------------

What sort of revs is the tacho showing at 60 then? Knowing your luck it probably has a rebuilt box with longer gears.

That is an aaz with a JX pump.
Get rid of that pump and fit a AAZ pump it will make a good difference to performance.
That blue thing in the corner is a charge cooler but not connected to anything.
You will need to see if there are any other parts to it. water pump, radiator, pipes for water etc.

Thanks for the info, there is also no turbo on it apparently.

then fitting the jx pump with the actuator would make very little sense. You know where to look for the turbo? (bottom left corner)

Jake had a look as he is familiar with diesels, unlike myself who is not.
