I am going the route as per Jakes and Aidens advice
Set of knarly off roads but road legal so you can get between lanes and a set of more road biased style, either good quality (branded) winter tyres or less aggressive 4x4 tyres.. as most of the driving will entail road use..
Lots of reports that BF Goodies in AT are great on road and great life too.. but cost a lot more.. I am going to look a a set of Toyo road biased as they seem good value here..

I find Machos quite OK for getting to and from events - dunno about really long tarmac drives- they need watching when road greasy (leaves, etc)... but there's no problem between lanes. Better than I imagined, but go steady till you've had a few hours on them...

Be carefull of the TOYO tyres they are made for much lighter
vehicles than a syncro.Very floppy side walls.Fitted a set to my 16 a few years back and never felt safe on them.So changed them.
If u want a set of 6 i still have them.All evenly worn etc.

Cheers Russel I was on about the new ones just out.. more an aggressive/winterised road tyre designed for modern 4x4's, open country I think..

As I have a DOKA and not a full on camper (lighter!!) would have poss been interested in those tyres.. but mines a 14" so 16" are a bit of a pain.. too big?? Oh and I have a set of 15" merc rims on hand already..

We've driven the Machos only since Coney Farm 1 - fortunately haven't had to contend with pouring rain at speed or particularly greasy roads yet - but they've been fine......kept the speed down and not done anything silly, think as long as you treat them with respect, apart from the noise, there's not too much noticeable difference.....

The ones i had fitted were the TOYO open country.They are only desighned for things like ZUZUK..... .Their load rating is definetly not up to any syncro in my opinion.I had them fitted to a 16 caravelle and they didnt give me any form of comfidence.The tread patern isnt bad for an all rounder.Personaly i would either go for the colways or INSA's or on the other end of the scale the BF's

did everyone go the Colway route because of the special deal at one of the 'meets' (can't remember which one, just remember reading about it) or was it based on them being good tyres for syncro use?

Spose it'd be a safer bet for me to run similar to everyone else at least while I'm getting used to things

Was gonna get Machos for off road.. cheap and people seem to be very happy..
Roads... well looks like some winter light truck tyres then!! or just settle for the AT's...

Whatever the tyres are, if it stands for too long then they'll flat-spot.

Andy I got the colways cos they were cheapest - £26 each from CJ
Jake did the deal with Snowdon for the various Greenways iirc and took delivery of them at his folks' and he and Thomas delivered them to CJ1 for everyone who'd ordered them

cheers aidan, that's what I'm angling at, did the club collectively decide on colways as they were cheap, fit them and find they were quite good

or was the decision to use them based on performance / experience?

At the Biggin Hill event, non of the AWDC people were running colways and appeared surprised with Matt making 'that hill'

stood watching, listening in to conversations, a few people commented on Matt's tyres, saying Macho's were designed for green laning?

Amazon/Macho treads have been used extensively by comp-safari racers, who are pretty demanding of tyres.

This knowledge (and having seen diamond tread covers in use in similar situations) informed the more aggressive choices made on the group buy and I stand by my recommendations.

No complaints on Machos...
Just don't let them fill completely up with half dried clayey mud
