Seriously, might go for the Ferry to Spain one year, apart from the price, I'm not sure I would cope being couped up on a ship for 28 hours - plus like Julie I would have the time to drive thorugh France. I particularly want to see the Milau Viaduct and visit Carcasone.
Louey,
This is where we stayed for a few days on the Tarne near Millau, coming back from the Val D'Arran Pyrenees trip. Pete and Sharon took Georgie and Andrew for a canoe paddle down the river.
We had a more leisurely 'bateau' trip (flat bottomed punt), with a very educated guide... lovely river - shallow gravel beds going to 9m depth in a few yards, with cliffs up to 900 ft above - fragile river environment!
Coming from the South West we drove under the Millau bridge and soon after a small sign to the right sent us up a narrow road to a large field set aside for viewing the bridge > very French > nice touch > a standalone composting toilet just through the gate in the field

My advise to anyone thinking of visiting or passing on through France is "just do it". I have been into camping and campers all my life( now old git ) and have never discovered a more camper friendly country than France. The campsites are brilliant but I must add only open generally during high summer although Municipal sites are open for much longer. You can find an aire d camping cars in most towns and of course the motorway service car parks or truck stops on route nationals (RN's) then of course if you respect the environement wild camping is more tolerated unless in the local park in Biarritz or paris etc having said that Paris has 2 or 3 camp sites very near the city centre.
As I said "just do it" I did and eventually moved here for good

So is Cantobre further upstream on that same river (some steep canyon). We certainly saw a lot of campers, cyclists, motorhomes (hence my smashed mirror), climbers (?), canoeists.... and holidaymakers in general! Seemed very nice there, but we stayed only two days and then moved on
