If I was buying now, and there just happened to be a choice, I'd go diesel for fuel economy - but seriously, you want to be able to fix it yourself, get a 2l Aircooled instead.....

Yeah diesel, definitely. The petrol engines will break your heart with fuel consumption, and the diesels are great as far as puling power is concerned. They may be small, but theyre a good engine.

I don't know where I read a comparison between petrol and diesel engines but I was reading about maintenances and it looks like diesels are a bit expensive about that than petrol ones...
By the way mine is diesel and I like it...
till breaks!

I've had two petrol vans, and a diesel doka on its 2nd engine (still being mended) and I know I prefer the petrol for responsiveness and zoominess, the diesels can be slow off the mark and sluggish, noisy and smelly, but there again, I just can't drive them properly.

Having spent the weekend listening to loads of people with TD Syncros revving the knackers off them it's not just you, Cate.
The torque of a diesel is found UNDER 3,000RPM, NOT at 4,750RPM.

Phew! Glad I'm not the only one then!

Diesel - if it's in good nick and does appear to give the fuel consumption they're capable of. If its knackered it'll be as bad or even worse trouble than a petrol... especially to get started. And your neighbours won't be thanking you either, as the wafts of smoke and fumes blow into their open windows... but aren't you moving to a Brighton palace with a drive and double garage all of your own soon?

At what revs does the limiter on the diesel engine kick in and whats the max revs the engine can do without being in the red so to speak? Sorry a little off topic I know but its only an aside question.

Do you think the neigbours have their windows open in cold weather or in a cold morning?
Mine suffered about glow plugs as you know and now still gets the yellow light 45 secs to dissapear... I have not seen if the fuse in the black box in the engine bay is bad or so but when I switch on my Syncro I can't see smoke anywhere

Governor on an AAZ 1.9TD ~ 4200 or therabouts
Governor on a JX 1.6TD ~ Dunno, similar I imagine (maybe 4500)
The standard revcounter looks like 4500 going into orange, 5000 into red
My AAZ's cam cover says Vmax = 3600 1/min ( I can only guess that refers to a very cautious limit for the cam-belt, as the engine has been well past 4500 many times, despite the governor!)

AAZ vary depending on what car they came from from but are 5050-5300, mine goes to 5300 but has little go after about 4800

Ah Andy, so if I put something like a GTD injection pump on it would transform it? definitely starts running out of go around 4000 rpm, despite having 12.5 psi boost.
So what's that Vmax = 3600 then on the cam belt cover all about, do you reckon

don't know what the vmax stands for, i have never noticed it on any i have seen.
The power range of these engines seems very eratic, mine is good at mid/high revs but is dead at low revs. Every one i see seems to have different bits on the pump. I think the only thing holding them back at the upper end is fuel or the lack of it. I have experimented with the power screw when its in 1.5 turns the power is excellent at all revs but the smoke is really bad at low revs (anything behind disapears) by the time it gets to 5000rpm there is no visible smoke which to makes me think when power screw is set as standard there must be little top end fuel. I am going to try a 1.6 boost pin when i get mine back on the road (having a lack of motivation at the moment)
