Camping with a dog. Brings back fond memories of my one and only mutt 'Poppy' (Golden Retriever). Just me and her and she slept at the foot of the bed....never really got over losing her even though she lived to the ripe old age of 15...

big dane in the van at the bottom of the bed...otherwise he unzips the awning or pulls the ground pegs out and goes wandering , little dane goes in the awning....both dogs go on the flor or the sofa when we are travelling...when we stop at traffic lights etc they both squeeze in between the front seats to have a look around.

How do you attach a cargo net across the back to stop them jumping over the back seat? I try and keep Bonnie in the back above the engine when driving but she has a tendancy to jump over and either lie on the seat or come and stand between the front seats with her nose pressed against the windscreen.

i fitted 2 hooks to the overhead locker and 2 low down on the back of the seat.
The last thing you want is a dog getting in the way when driving or being hit in the back of the head if you crash.

We have a largish canvas travel cage when were driving for our springer Sally - as it's mostly covered it keeps her cool when it's baking hot. We travelled up from Cornwall yesterday and it was sweltering - part way through I was tempted to get in it myself! It's quite big so she has her own space when we are loaded up and obviously can't get near the driver. If she sleeps in the van it's on a dog bed on the main floor. In the awning she sleeps in the travel cage so she can't go wandering during the night.

Our staffy sleeps on the floor by the sliding door in his very comfy padded bed... except if there's a chance of thunder/fireworks/crop scarers or guns... then he becomes a trembling wuss and pushes himself as far into the front footwell as he can! We use a dog harness in the van attached to the rear lap belts... sudden braking plus velocity of a few stone of untethered dog can seriously damage your health Those twist in stakes are the dogs wotsits for a safe tie up during the day, only once have we not been able to get it into the ground because of stones.

...and airing your sleeping bags on the dry grass is a recipe for 'dog heaven'!

our 2 little rascals tend to sleep wherever they feel like. oh and sometimes they try and drive look
(best bet is to train your dog so you don't have to tie it up on campsites, we never do)

We sleep in the hi top and our lab takes the rock n roll

Just about every campsite we,v used say you must keep all dogs on a leash

We've been told that too, which is why we bought the twist-in stake, and we attach his extending lead to it, so he can wander (hey, he's still on a lead! ), but he tends to get tangled in the guy ropes of the awning.

We used to take our dog away with us all the time in our old campervan and we just used to bring his dog bed from home and wherever we put it thats where he slept

And I think keeping dogs on a leash at campsites is only fair for us folk with little'uns running around

SD goes where we put her bed; awning, back seat for travelling, floor fo sleeping at night...
To be honest she's not often on a lead, but she doesn't leave "her" pitch, but all of us dog owners have to accept that there are others out there without our understanding of our own pets. Common sense is always called for. We take SD everywhere with us that doesn't have a blanket "no dogs" rule, if it does we just don't go there.

Most councils (if relevant) can provide a list of beaches etc that are dog friendly

we always keep our dog tied up on sites and follow the campsite rules but i wish some of the parents would follow the rules regarding children not playing in the toilet blocks we just got back from Gwithian farm in cornwall where despite the owner having to put up notices asking parents not to allow kids to play in the blocks they were ignored the toilets were in a mess sinks blocked with toilet paper and one day they pulled all the plugs of the sinks and put them in the toilet system causing damage most of the dogs on site seemed better behaved than the kids .I am all for the kids having a good time on site but they should not need to play in the toilet block.

They say dogs have a vocabulary of 17 words. 'Camper' is one of our springer's 5 or so (springers are a little slow). If I'm on my own she sits in the passenger seat and has mastered the art of 'banking' into corners nicely. If the family are on board she squeezes in the back above the engine but is getting old and can't jump up from the ground - has to go over the back seat. The awning would seem the most sensible place for her to sleep but....

We have 2 bassets and I can honestly say they are very stubborn. Ours sleep on the floor by the sliding doors but they do take up alot of space especially first thing in the morning when they decide to jump on the bed.
