id maybe looking at the air filter too, and the pipe work to it, this can give the symptoms of noisey on acceleration like you suggested, and also vac pipes perishing?
also check the center pin of the dissy cap, they have a spring bhind them, but the dust gets in there and stops it pushing on the top of the rotor arm sometimes......

Thanks very much for all the info and ideas. Its been a busy day with one thing and another, but there's new plugs, leads and air filter in there now and, fingers crossed, it seems to be running nicely again, phewf!!
btw, Haynes tells me that the air filter should be changed every 2 years . . . is it telling me fibs again?

Ours hasn't been in for 2 years, so I wasn't gonna change it till Dec.

Working in a quarry I change it twice a year .... I'd recommend you just check it at each service and change it annualy/18 months .. they're only cheap anyroad.
