I was going to buy this myself as a spare to sit in the shed just in case. But if your needs are greater than mine then I'll leave the bidding to you.

I changed my 1.6na to a 1.9na engine last year and the difference is simplly amazing. My engine change took me one whole day to complete. Problem is it took another two weeks to start it as I had problems. But I'd do it all again.

I nearly went down that route myself (aaz conversion) I even bought a golf as the donar car. But I read a bit more and a bit more and ended up selling the car again and going for the 1Y convesrion instead.
My main reason was that my bed sits directly on top of the engine cover. Some have a storage compartment between the hatch and the matress, mine didnt! The td engine has a actuator unit which clashes with the cover and you needto cut a hole so it can poke up through the cover. This wouldnt have helped with a good nights sleep.
There are other complications but nothing insumountable but agro all the same. The 1y engine really does go straight in !!!!!! nothing else does really.
I race bikes so I use mine to tow and its still pulls sufficiently, so dont poo poo the 1Y till you have tried it.

Thanks Splendiforous, i'm gonna go with the one you pointed out to me - at least if it's a total knacker i wont have wasted a fortune, and if it isn't, it'll go straight in and i will be a happy bunny
What bikes do you race?

OK. Good plan. I am in gloucester, so not too far away from you. Might be able to help you throw the engine in if your in no rush. I have a huge workshop with all the gear needed including fork lift.

Cheers dood - i just said to Wellie that because i have no facilities here, i'd take it down to Sam at Celtic Soul, who's a top dood, and get him to rebuild it and fit it - i'm in no rush per se, but i'd need to time it so that i don't dissapoint the girls between trips away during the summer holidays

This has always interested me - whereabouts do you race?

Cornwall mainly as thats where we are from. But we also do the weston beach race and a few of the welsh enduro's.
See what you can find out about the engine when you buy it. the pump was the issue with mine as the pleb had left it outside with no bungs fitted in the fuel inlet. with 140k on the clock i'd not expect much in the way of engine wear. maybe the pump again. See what he says.
Let me know anyaway.

I got to say - you've found some peaches there on ebay.
The TD one looks great - especially if the bloke is going to sell all the bits for £100 to do the conversion (someone will have to ask him what he means by this as there's a lot for the TD - turbo, inlet/outlet manifolds, sump etc).
The seat van looks a bargain for £300. To see it running (and the fact its only got 97k on it) is worth a lot of money -in the past i've spent £200 on low mileage 1Y's that i havent even seen running (i was lucky). You could even sell those alloys to get some money back (you wouldnt keep em lol).
I wouldnt bother with the spares or repair 1Y - look around hard enough and you can find a runner for £100.
You have to love the simplicity of the 1Y conversion - its so straight forward and reliable.
However, the AAZ is simply brillaint - but its not without its pitfalls. I've already had to change a turbo and been recovered due to a snapped oil return pipe to the turbo. But i do 20k miles a year and the TD is soooo much nicer to drive. I love it.
My usual advice on this subject is "if it aint broke dont fix it" because the increase in power that the 1Y gives isnt that impressive (well - i went from the KY 1.7d which i loved) - but for a cheap fix its great. However, if you have a bit of spare cash and fancy a grin - then go for the AAZ conversion.
I drove the 1Y for two years (two different engines - i blew the first one up with the same dodgy oil pump that blew my 1.7 up) and it was great. Very nice to know you have a spare in the garage too
Good luck with whatever you do - there's plenty of info on here. Dont be shy if you want a chat - PM me for my number....
