Diesels do this when the timing is out/injectors are worn/heads are on the way out/pistons and barrels are passing/worn......

Already had the rocker cover gasket done last oct , lacal garage was convinced that was the problem but its still leaking , checked and repaired/replaced all the breather pipes ,still leaking , gunked the whole engine and after a half hour trip was back underneath trying to find the offending leak but its almost impossible to find although there always seems to be oil on the top of the exhaust inside the engine bay ? , and always seems to be oil around the end of the dipstick ? i would imagine that as the engine is so exposed from underneath that any oil leak would get picked up by the air running under the body and splash up on the tailgate ?
The search continues..............................................thanks for all of your replies so far guys, very interesting !!

Ahhh the problem is probably the base of the dipstick then. I had this problem. I had the garage remove the dipstick tube carefully (as not to get crap in the engine through the dipstick hole) clean the tube and inlet well then seal the dipstick in the hole with an o ring and something suitable sealant wise. Can't remember what it was now. Heat proof and pliable. That did the trick.

Found this o-ring and washer for bottom of the dipstick that just isn't there, I will probably try it. If it works, it will £2.30 worth of pure joy.
