properly refurbed petrol starter from me with new bush £80 if that helps at all
diesel £100, new gears and everything done right

I didn't think diesels had the bushes either, I am sure I read it on the wiki here.

Diesels have a bush but it's fitted in the nose of the starter, petrol doesn't have a self supporting nose so the bush is in the gearbox bellhousing, not all refurbishers would replace the bush as a matter of course and not all refurbers supply one with a refurb petrol starter, the guy who does my starter and alternator work does

i knew they had a starter rob its in the glove box aint it?..undr the seat perhaps
no i thought like prolly many on here that those bushes went in the bell housing on petrols and diesels had the nose cone thing so didnt need em...shows that you can learn summat every day...i did ask about em before and was informed by someone on here that diesels dont have them...

i felt a bit coz i was mis-informed

Question the bush does fit in the end of the starter where it engages into the engine?!

The bush on mine was split and quite clearly impeding the starter turning/engaging
So do I have a different starter motor or something?
Wanted to get the damn thing done today!

good old jk they sold you the bush for the petrol engine for fitting in the bellhousing you need 028 911 257 from vw about £1.80 it'll be right

Cool! Only problem now is my vw place aint very interested in getting me bits they were less than helpful when trying to get other parts, said I need to go to a commercial dealership.....funny they said that they couldn't get bits for t25's.

I can order it from MAnchester TPS and send it on, call me before 10 monday morning or pm me tonight and I'll sort it.

No they should be like any other vehicle however if the engine has had a history/issues in the past it is not uncommon for starters to pack up as someo of them have had to endure hours of cranking whilst people tinker with engines....

Should be here Wednesday, will put it on in the afternoon. Is the soaking in oil 4 24 hours a must or can I copper slip it?

This from a previous posting on the subject.

No, you don't have to soak the new bush overnight, just pop it on your thumb fill it with oil and squeeze between thumb and forefinger - thanks go to Mr. Simon Baxter of Brickwerks fame for that tip........ you can actually see the oil seep through the sides of the bush!

Ok guys and gals still cant get it going!
Changed the bush in the nose of the starter got jump leads on it tried a wee bit of easi start ( I know its evil stuff) and nothing. Just to reiterate the van was going well before I left it over winter
6 years ago I had the alternator, starter,glo plugs injectors all changed repaired and a new batt.
Its smoking but just wont start very close but just wont fire. As mentioned the last time this happened 6 years ago I went through all the things above finally having the starter reconned and it started. Starter motor again then?
Is there anything else in the starter that can impede the speed it turns over?
I guess the way to check is to give it a tow...if it starts its the starter again.
Otherwise I'm thinking glo plugs (got 12.9v to them) or fuel blocakage/air or timing /pump which I aint gonna mess with.
Best way to check glow plugs....?
