Mate, each seller will sell an engine for what they sell an engine for. I think you got a good engine. That's more important than what it comes with. I don't agree you got screwed, only that your expectations have not been met.

Since recyclers sell engines usually to blokes who have the same engine in their car, their version of "complete engine" is shortblock with head, which is essentially what you purchased. Because if you had a broken 1Y already, this replacement is all you would need.

My advice is to buy a cheap £250 engine, but this time specify with the seller what you need the engine to have. Then take the bits you need off it, attach it to the engine you already own, then sell the cheap 1Y (now stripped from bits) for £250 - to make back the ££ and be back at square one. Alternatively, keep the spare engine as a spare, and mark it down to experience.

I do not believe the seller screwed you - just doing his business of maximizing profit, which is what professionals do in this line of business. The others who'll sell you a complete engine with ancillaries for dirt cheap will probably give you "store credit" if the engine turned out to be a dud and won't refund you the money. So then who's really screwed?

I'm sure this seller would give you your money back if you asked for it and returned the engine to him, which is what reputable professionals do in this line of work. If you wanted to go down this route, and he balks, advise him that you will call Visa to get a chargeback.

A chargeback prompts Visa to investigate. The first thing Visa asks for is the signature on the receipt. If it's not there, you automatically get your money back. If it is there, and you are not satisfied, they look into your history to see if you are abusing the chargeback system. If not, they will give you your money back. Once they give you your funds back, they will "blacklist" the company. After a few blacklistings, Visa will remove the authority of the company to accept Visa cards, which means lost revenue to the company. A *serious* loss of revenue. This is why junkyards in particular hate accepting credit cards (along with the fees they have to pay). That's why they cut a deal if you pay in cash.

It wouldn't hurt to threaten the company with a chargeback, if you don't get the ancillaries. Or call Visa and initiate a chargeback. This is assuming of course that it's a Visa credit card, not a Visa debit card. Chargebacks, as far as I am aware, only occur with bonafide credit cards.

Ask me how I know? I have a store "credit" voucher for my nearby junkyard....hint, hint...and yes, I paid in cash.

have a look at eatcustards suggestion and give em a ring again ,see if it can be sorted out...in my eyes they should sent you the rest of the INCOMPLETE engine FOC

This may help. Can't get more complete than this.

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/golf-engine-1-9-d ... 240%3A1318" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Advise the seller that this is been put on a VW forum and that several people will call him and complain about this, which will affect his business and you will consider naming and shaming him. PM me their number, so I can call on your behalf if you wish.

What a disappointment.

I always got put off those kind of sellers because they always wanted way over the top in terms of price. It does rub your nose in it that it doesnt come with injection pump.

I'd be looking for another engine out of a seat or golf etc and then use the pump off that - and then keep the other engine as a spare.

It makes me cringe to think of all the stuff i have thrown away (like a 1Y injection pump) but i havent got the room to store these things - sorry i cant be any more help..

Im a tad busy now but if you need help looking for an engine on ebay i could take a look at the weekend....

Thanks for all the advice boys BUT after spitting my dummy out I have had a result. It was 247spares that I initially went through so I gave them a call this morning and the lady said what I got was a complete engine so I said if I sold her a car would she expect wheels on it ? Didnt get that far and called Trading Standards they agreed that if I purchased a complete engine then thats what I should have been supplied. Within 5 minutes 247 called back and agreed that the discription is misleeding and they would contact the dealer who supplied it. (247 were very very helpfull) I then within another few minutes had a call from the breaker who was very appologetic and agreed that the complete engine discription was wrong and he would be changing it. He promised all the missing parts were being dispatched to me at no extra charge imediately. He asked me to ring 247 and let them know that he had resolved the problem, this I agreed to do after I recieved the parts. 247 must put a lot of work his way ! Anyway lessons have been learnt and I will be more carefull and not trust people so readily in the future as I did ask him when I placed the order and he promised a complete engine with all the anciliaries. ( I have been a tad foolish methinks)
I just hope that when fitted this bloody engine is OK. I did try seven breaker yards in my area who could not help me that is why I followed this route
and I was getting a bit desperate but searching sites tonight I have actually found 3 1Y,s, now that is a bugger.
Watch this space as I wonder what will be in the next box I recieve from him.
Just to sum up..........a complete engine is with all parts and a short engine is block only. BUT there again a short engine is also just the block with no head, is that clear now ?
Thanks again everyone.

just a bit of advice for folks for future reference.
if you require the whole engine including all the bolt ons always ask for a complete, turnkey engine.
this way they know you require the whole bag o mashins.
hope you come out of this ok :ok

Hello Camper,
No Trading Standards did not actually get involved, just gave me advice as they would not get involved until they had all the quote paperwork which is fair enough. It was down to 247 (very good people) who are the people I initially dealt with..........they put out your request and various breakers take it from there, so a good outcome was in their interest too. I have not had time to "play" yet as I have been fitting a new bathroom for my son but have had a quick snout.......did I tell you that I have a new engine :) anyway it is out of a Caddy and still has a power steering pump on it (free to a good home). If the kids have no more jobs for me I will make a start tomorrow.

Dont take this the wrong way but as the missing parts are now on there way who is gonna time the pump up etc??? I would be getting them to pay a garage to fit it all up and time it etc !!!!!! If you get it wrong it could wreck the engine!

Well boys, we done it. I had delivered to me today all the missing parts so a good outcome in the end, oh I am just short of the injection pump drive pulley ! I think the one off my KY will fit as long as it is the right diameter and number of teeth ?????
For all my whinging I think I have come out of this quite well but can,t but help feeling a tad stingy and a bit sorry for the dealer who in the end was very helpfull (except for the pulley) this whole thing is not in my nature 57 1/2 year old peacefull hippy. Upward and onward, got me swarfega out weldore !
Would really like to thank all you boys for your help and advice, please keep it comming as I place progress photos in a new thread.
