when ah did marn ah seem welded the repair with 1mm then added a small thicker 3mm strengthener seemwelded just to spread the load....thats normally more than enough.....incidentally i found marn when i tried to remove the seatbelts for painting.....ah put me breaker bar on the nut n just ripped the bolt straight out the floor!!!!!and that had been mot'd 6 months previous......

when i did mine i drilled the 1mm and 4mm plates,used the nut and bolt to bold em together.turned the 1 mm upside down and welded the nut to the 4mm,then the 4 mm to the 1mm .waited for it to cool...well i say waited..it got quenched.then seamed the whole thing into place

Mine arrived today so they still have them

seems like this area is a common rot area on these vans as both sides on mine were dying/dead and have needed a plating jobs much like Dave spoke about...

I suppose the good news is you spotted it and are now in a position to sort it out - last thing anyone wants is a smash and to then find out the seat belt mounts were rotten

thanks for the link, I was wondering about these though (the second ones down). They look the business but it comes up with 'item not found' or somesuch when you click it. I just wanted a bigger pic of them really so I could tell whether they're supposed to go above or below (below I guess?) and what thickness. I'll maybe give 'em a ring today.

I had assumed until now that if a vehicle had a lenghty MOT that there would be no worrying safety issues but that's obviously not the case.

I know this is an old thread, but I can't seem to find any info elsewhere.

I have the same front seatbelt mounting issue, I have just ordered repair plates from Brickwerks, and was intending to seam weld them on, but it looks like I'll probably need to have a bit more metal than is on the repair plate. This is the first time I'll be tackling a welding repair like this, so far it's all been cosmetic stuff so not been so concerned about the structural integrity of the join, but obviously a seatbelt mounting needs to be done right! So, some people in this thread have mentioned welding plates on, is that done by cutting out all the rusty metal then welding the plate overlapping some good shiny metal? Or are they talking about welding a plate either side of the good metal ( i.e. above and below).

Ben, I just cut out all the bad steel, made a plate slightly bigger than the hole, stepped or curved the steel round the hole and welded it up. Then ground it smooth. You may have to drill a hole for the seat belt bolt and reweld the nut on the underside. Make sure the steel is strong enough round the seat belt mount and that the weld is seam or it will fail again...

I'll get onto cutting out the rot then! Got a repair plate on the way from Brickwerks, so hopefully that should make the whole nut part a bit easier.

looking at the wheel arch, the metal is so thin. So bascially you can put a seat belt mounting point anywhere, as long as u use the mounting point plate?

has anyone ever moved the mounting point away from the wheel arch? if so where?

hey, is this legal? using the same mount point for the seat belt roller and the lower mount?

Or should there always be 3 mounts (1 lower, 1 roller and 1 upper) and this wouldnt pass the MOT like this?


But in any case, its safer at the moment, as you can see the hole at the bottom, it was just the upper layer of metal holiding it in place, and the mount point was totally free. Other side was even worse!

Speaking as a tester, I can't see any reason to fail it like that...unless it doesn't work correctly does the lower part of the belt still cross your waist or is it now higher

So getting the wheel arches fixed up now and the rest of that mess too
