Chris,
A standard nut that fits a 13mm spanner has an 8mm thread, one that fits a 17mm spanner has a 10mm thread. There are exceptions to this rule for specials.
I don't understand your reference to 'Replacing shafts' and 'screwing in'. Guess you mean the studs. They may not need replacing anyway and if they do it should be easy, but access etc. is probably difficult.
I think you would do better to get some help from someone with a bit more hands on experience. Not easy to advise from a distance, and I have never even seen inside a 2 litre Aircooled rocker cover.

Or photograph it close-up and post it here?

Thanks Guys - yes, sorry I did mean the studs (not 'shafts').
I managed to get a smaller nut splitter from Screwfix (£8.99) so will have a going at cracking the nuts off when I get chance this week. Once I've done that I will be able to see what damage has been done (if any as you pointed out).
Thanks again!
Chris

Right then - a quick update.
Managed to get out on the bus tonight with my inspection lamp and armed with the new nut splitter.
Split the nuts off the left hand side of the rocker assembly and the shaft came off fine. Had a hell of a fight trying to split the nuts on the right side but noticed both studs were spinning so managed to carefully unscrew each stud with the nuts still intact until they came out of the body. No probs - so will now try and split the nuts off these on the bench when I get another chance to check if any damage to the actual studs.
The two that I did split off have had the thread shredded clean off the studs about half way down but not right to the bottom. I will replace these with new studs and nuts now. Got some Loctite to hold them in hopefully once screwed in.
I'll kepp you posted on how I get on....feeling a bit better now....

Chris

Hacksaw down the side of the thread, then chisel nut apart with back of nut dollied/supported on vice or similar

Does anyone know what size nuts I will need to replace the ones I've split off?
