An easy way to reduce the oil level if not too much is to unscrew the oil filter, drain it and put it back.

It is...
and if you have a big oil cooler circuit, take the oil filter off, put a tray under the filter head as close as possible, and motor the engine in stages on the starter to purge the old oil out, worked for me on a 1.9 diesel (3 litres in oil cooler circuit!)

Use an oil suction pump down the dipstick hole to get the excess out.

Update on oil overfill. I tried a suction pump to no avail. So I undid the oil strainer nut (the oil drain one was very tight, and I was nervous re causing damage to the nut or thread - hence using the central oil strainer nut which turned easily). I drained off just under half a litre. So thanks to the person who said the 2 litre air cooled takes 3.5 litres, because that tallies - 1 litre left in can, four in engine - half a litre drained - now top of max line on dip stick.
Is there any reason not to use the oil strainer nut to drain the oil in future - it seemed very easy?
