With bare metal you should use etch primer then normal primer then paint,or maybe etch primer then zinc primer and so on.

I have some seems to do this summer and I have been looking at using Granvilles Rust Cure. Has anyone used it?

I used a wire brush on a drill and loads of rust converter, then sprayed with primer, and got sidetracked all winter, I keep having a look and it seems to be holding up well, will probably strip it back a bit when it gets warmer. Theres way too much damp in the air at the mo, need to get a good days sun on the panels if you ask me.

Mind you im never going to have it looking mint, and i kind of like it looking "rugged"

The best results I have had weren't acheived with brushes on a drill either - £30ish buys a small shotblaster that gets right into the seam BUT even this can't get to the points behind the welds or welded pinch points and sealed box sections etc.
Nothing short of pulling each seam apart, shot blast and treating it, rewelding it back together (which burns the treatment off again anyway - I know as I have done all this!) and resealing it and gettin the paint asap will give you the near permanent cure but even that won't work this time of year outdoors!
By the very nature of the design of these vans means that the seam rust will be there forever once its caught hold. I have cured some seams totally but not many and they usually involved chopping complete panels out and replacing with Vw panels - JK and the like are cheaper but crapper and don't last long at all in my experience! I just try n keep on top of the rust on mine now which is pretty mint anyway but it still tries to creep back in...
Jus enjoy driving it n don't worry too much bout it - thats my best solution!

If i have to tidy it up every couple of years , that'll do me.
Just looking forward to using it , although my wife is so pregnant she wont be able ot get in it soon!

That's what I do mate.
The guy who sprayed mine said this too.
he said after a full respray, come back in a couple of years and we'll touch the seams up...which he did,
now we're coming up to the fourth year and this time, there's less to touch up...

Nothing to do with seams, not started that yet, but i used vactan on some bare metal on our camper last yr, to date the area treated has not shown any rust; not painted over either.

Same here and its still black.............
Although i would admit that where I have sanded it back it has not done so well which is pretty obvious really.
Cover it with Vactan, primer it them rub it back, dont try to rub it back before primer as you are just removing the protection you have applied.

try painting it on the rust before you sand it m8 it does work honest

Hi, If your sure that you have cleared out ALL the rust, back to bare metal, then use the heat gun and dry it untill yos see a kind of "wave" of moisture evoporate off the metal surface. Then paint on Lowe Rust red oxide primer. (Lowe is spelt with those two little round circles over the letter o, as Scandinavians do)
Let it dry for 24 hours, gently warm again and put on another coat. Then top coat. I painted a cattle trailer 20 years ago with this stuff and its still good. Even a T25 dosent spend its life coated with pig and cattle muck!

Agree 100% Kev, the guy who's painting The Bus said the only way to treat rust is to cut it out and weld a new panel in. He's painting it for now and mixing extra paint to re-do the seams again when required.

On a positive note , the parts of our van the sprayer felt were the worst the prep guy say's weren't that bad and say's "Ignore him, he's spent too long working on modern stuff and French cr@p" All the local boy racers go there to have their Paxos fixed up

I guess the truth will out tonight when I go fer a butchers (with me camera )
