not greasing the terminals is what caused it, then add some damp or water and you get acid corrosion, that stuff is horrid to breath in.
needs to be cleaned off with a brillo pad

Agree, clean it off and then smother the terminal with Vaseline (I know you've got some jars lying around).

Ah I never spotted that
OK well other reasons, could be a poor seal between the battery post and the case.
When you clean it off check for any moisture around the post after a a run out.

personally I would dump it and get a new one, that stuff is very acidic and rots steel like roadsalt

Cheers Kev. I seem to have the same problem every year when we have a prolonged chilly spell. Last year it was both batteries, bit expensive :?

have you checked you're not overcharging?

13-14 volts is normal, to be sure the regulator is not fu-barred

It is charging between 13-14, well the gauge says it is. The main battery is ok this year so far.
