Some motors need it, some don't. If yous is lumpy when first started, use it. If not, don't. It won't hurt anything by using it.

I've not used the cold start on mine yet, but I have noticed that with this cold weather the van only ticks over at 600 rpm and sounds rough until the engine warms up a bit when the tick over rises and all is well so I might start using the cold start ( used to use the cold start on my peugeot pick up all the time in the winter used to start sweeter with less smoke)
