it can get confusing... so a lot of us use the term top up tank and expansion tank

as the names suggest they do what their name says .. the expanding water flows into the top up tank

I get mine from VW

so for example you are not losing fluid and both tanks are at correct level you have good results from pressure test and gas combustion tests why else would a van overheat ?If is a blockage how does one clear it ?

Jewlee....sorry to hear still having problems. Mine was flashing overheat...I changed the blue cap to a genuine VW one, from VW. (it had a blue one on before, but was old as indicated by date stamp on top). I wasn't loosing water.

Since doing that, no more flashy light.

I presume you hve already done that though. I syor thermostat working properly? If it wasn't allowing water through to rad....it would overheat? Seem to remember a reason for running without thermostat was constant overheating.

Had a good go at bleeding the system today went realy, realy well, took it out for a 30 mile drive and checked the level when during and when i got back, the level dropped to where the pipe is so about 2cm max from the top.

I presume this is ok as it runs sweet, but i did notice a small leak towards the front of the vehicle just by the spare wheel looks like a jubilee clip is failing.

i would just like to point out that, only later water systems have the aforementioned "Darlek" type cap on the header tank, early water systems have a "Bayonet" type steel cap, like car used to have when radiator used to have radiator caps.......

just need to point that out.... for future readers of this thread , in years to come
