We have this problem and we have just had a new screen & new seals put in with no rust on the surround.
could it be something to do with the wiper spigots or water drippinf in via the little holes in the gutter and on to the rubber when the door is opened???

For some reason I doubt it's my windscreen as the corners are in fine fettle.
However my door seal is wet all around when it rains, especially at the bottom so I think as it's 23 years old it's not quite sealing properly. I will most likely try changing it.

Not having done this myself, but, my 2d's worth, to remove if you are not going to reuse the seal then cut it with a stanley knife between glass and rubber, use KY jelly not washing up liquid, washing line (smooth plastic coated type) I have heard is good, SO speaks the armchair mechanic!

The corners don't have to be rusted to let water in, if water can get in behind the rubber at any point it collects in those corners, because the corners are backwards tilting they dont naturally drain outwards, they drain inwards! Another wonderful vw design!

I had this problem on one my single cab. Fitted new screen and geniune rubber, was watertight for about 2 weeks and then poured in. It was removed dried out and refitted with sealer this time lasted about a month and poured in. It was removed again fitted with a new seal which was bonded to glasss and then bonded to body, one year on and its still watertight.
The quality of replacement rubbers geniune and aftermarket seems to be very eratic. I am a only fit geniune part person but i have been shocked at the quality of the geniune seals. The windscreen fitter that does my screens hates vw seals.

I think 'kicking' the screen out with flat of hoof is a bit 'senationalist' and likely to lead someone new to this, down the wrong road - maybe 'pushing' it out might be a better way of describing it ?

Judging from the rust on the inside of your panel (2nd picture) it must have been leaking for some considerable time.

The other bone dry side is the same. it's more discolouration than rust
