Morning all, whats the maximum tyre tread difference before the drive train begins to suffer?[ cant find it in the Wiki ].

I always thought it was 2mm. You can swap so that for instance your front axle has a 6mm and a 8mm, and the same at the back, rather than 6mm at the front and 8mm at the back. This then gives similar axle speeds.

No, the manual for the Kangoo Trekka, and the RX4 does not mention it. The four wheel drive system has an intelligent de-coupler, and spends most of it's life in 2wd. The computer that does the traction control, ebd, and abs works out when you need it. Cant feel anything connecting though. But it clearly works.

The rear tyres do scrub everso slightly on the insides, but only noticable when getting low on the treads.

By proper I mean caperble of off road work, not a road car with 4x4. I assumed through your query you were surgesting you have a decoupler and therefore your syncro was more of a proper off road vehicle than most.

All apologys for my "pooh" grasp of the english language, I think this is as good as it'll ever get.

Ah.. wellI was "told" the RX has a VC too.. and they scrub like a bugger when missmatched and "worn".... Stand corrected....

:wink: Sorry Glen but RX4 does have a VC according to the quick "google" search I did... ...... havent checked a "trekka" yet but would assume that it runs a very similar system...

No you are right Simon, there is a VC in the back axle, just like the front syncro gearbox, but at the back. The Kangoo has a generic problem with the VC in that after about 30,000 miles it starts to amke a tinkling noise which is very noticable at slow speeds. Mine is on it's third, two replaced by Renault, now out of warranty so I would have to fork out £708.00 plus vat. so I will be putting up with the tinkling noise.

The system just de-couples adsactly like a syncro.

That was a 45deg slope on road tyres and landrover ruts.

Mmm... I saw that clip on Utube the other day but didnt put 2 and 2 together..... somehow!!!!!!!

surprised it went up there... seemed to "bottom" out a bit, but I suppose the momentum carried it through too... :lol: :lol: :lol:

There was a bit of axle articulation in that middle section, and as the suspension only moves about 12mm it caused a wheelspin, only has traction control on the front. The engine is a real beaut, 16v 1.6 petrol, love it. Had to tackle it flat out, as normal car 1st gear.

Thats at the Market Rasen Landrover demonstation track, it's on a fab By Way, starts behind the Race Course, and heads out all along the very beautiful Limcolnshire Wolds, your neck of the woods now?? Great fording places there aswell.

If work hadnt taken me back to Devon we would be in Lincolnshire now, a really great place to live. Might try and get more work that way soon, or when the kids have finished school.

Thanks Simon, 10,000 miles ago i put two new tyres on the back wheeles [11mm ish fronts8 ish] [the vc has failed open,if i turn a back wheel a front one does turn but no propper drive!] no noise from the front diff!!.A few days ago i put two new tyres on the front wheels and i could hear the front diff singing, i then swaped one new tyre to the back and one to the front[diff a bit quieter] then two new tyres on the back and one new one old on the front[diff quieter still]but it was'nt untill i put a new tyre on the front that the diff was quiet again[ new tyres all round!!]. So it seems [to me] better to have newer tyres on the back axel [as far as diff noise goes].
What do you all think?
