I drove around France for three weeks with the fridge on gas with no problems. And as said earlier it says its ok in the manual.

Sometimes when we leave our fridge "on gas" for a long time I'm convinced I can smell gas. Now we tend not to have it on except on electric hook-up.
Is there a battery powered alarm you can get for gas??, all the one's I've found are 240V which defeat's the object

We picked up 2 Battery powered CO monitor/alarms for £10 each from B&Q a few weeks ago.
1 for the van and 1 for the house.

Yes there are small portable gas detectors on the market.
Think they are about £20 on Ebay.

yes u can drive with the gas on the only problem is it could cause a venturi effect and blow out the pilot flame,but that ok cause once the thermocouple detects no flame it will active the shutting down of the gas valve within 40 - 90 seconds.
CO2 detectors DO NOT DETECT A GAS ESCAPE they detect co2 a non smelling/visual gas that is giving off by incompleat combustion on any open flued or fluless gas applience ie your cooker. SO IF WHEN COOKING YOU HAVE A FLOPPY YELLOW FLAME YOU HAVE TROUBLE, SAME WHEN LOOKING THROUGH THE INSPECTION HOLE ON THE FRIDGE
LPG is heavier than air and if you have a gas escape it will lie in low areas like the steps at the driver and passanger doors hence the vents in the floors( and if your really posh its in a sealed compartment)
