Infact, if the advance cable isn't attached it deffo wasn't me and I do remember who worked on it and thats another reason why he won't be working for me again!

Whats it mean if the coldstart leaver doesn't seem to do much? Mines conected to the arm on the pump but doesn't really affect the sound/speed of the engine at all when pulled. Possubly makes starting slightly easyer but maybe thats me thinking it does something. Starts fine with heat and pulls well. I've herd on some VW's the leaver rases the engine speed and makes all the difference from cold where as others don't seem to care - depends how the pump timeing is set? What do they do if they are bang on right?

Some of the later stuff does indeed raise the idle speed, it has a spearate mechanism to do so.
The idle speed does not increase on the JX, it only advances the timing a few degrees at low revs.
The lever and mechanism act on the advance piston at the bottom of the pump, you pull the lever and it pushes the advance piston into an advanced position.
Once the engine revs rise, internal pump pressure rises and it overides the advance lever and the timing advances in it's own right, so the lever has no bearing on full timing advance and is only operative to about 1200-1500 rpm, then, as I said, internal pump pressure should be sufficient enough to advance the piston further than the cable can.

Are that makes sence, the engine I herd reving on coldstart was a car version so must have had that function. I'll go back to thinking that as mine starts happy and seems to pull quite well on boost it can't be far out then.

Smokey

Had the same smokey embarassing problem with my 1.7diesel but now I pull the "choke" advance lever out EVERYTIME i start it I have no problems. As soon as she starts I push it back in. She runs like a dream cruises at 60mph and returns 30 plus to the gallon. Is yours a bugger to start or is it just the smoke?

On my previous reply, could someone tell me something about this 1.7 non turbo diesel engine please.........is it a golf engine. She does actually use oil but does not leak and no visible smoke so must be burning some.
Just done 980miles around France and used 5 litres. So come on you old timers what do you think.

The only thing I know about the 1.7D is that I have a cylinder head and cam for one - somewhere.
and that they were supposed to go 'a bit' better than the 1.6D

The 1.7D "KY" engine is unique to the T3.

Oooooh.....Moving pictures! :o

Maybe not quite that bad. But almost if I don't use the 'choke' thingy.

Have been living with it for a few weeks now & have worked out not too bad with the cold start pulled out.

You live & learn. :P
