Update on the van.
Had a look at the linkage this morning as we thought the cable had snapped. Turned out to be an easy fix though..the little pushrod under the pedal had come off the lever assembly.
Started it up and it ran ok but fast. When you put it in gear it would stall (auto)
My dad came up and gave us a hand with it. If the idle was adjusted low it would keep cutting out...to fast and it would stall putting it into drive or reverse. Eventually a compromise was found and now it idles a bit fast but doesn't stall putting it into gear. It will cut out now and again coming to a stop at junctions etc but it does run.
There is a noticable increase in power now too....cheers Fritz
Not too sure about going to Tatton in it as I dont think I am covered for a breakdown yet (as I have just used it) I think they refuse cover if called out for the same fault within a certain time..I will try and find out.
I am thinking of using the place that Fritz mentioned that will rebuild the Pierburg carb. I thought about the Weber conversion but have heard mixed opinions on here
I shall see how it goes ....

Thought about Tatton tomorrow so..tried the van out tonight. It started first time but idled a bit fast...let the revs die down after a minute or so and took it for a spin round the block. I've found that once it gets warm, it revs its socks off! Without touching the pedal, it was running at about 30+ mph

and I cant take it out of drive as it idles too fast and will stall trying to put it in gear (don't want to knacker the gearbox either)
I'm thinking I'll have to get the carb set up properly.
Thought about Bomyard VW for a rebuild but would really prefer to get it to Gasure and let Steve have a look if poss.
I have heard he is very busy with the gas conversions too. I'll have to get in touch and find out.
My problem will be getting it to him (if he has the time to fit it in)
I think if we can lower the idle speed a bit...we should be able to get it there.

it's a 1.9 DG watercooled (1986 D reg)
The carb is going to be split and cleaned out when I get hold of a gasket for it.
I just cleaned the carb air box out..not the one that houses the filter, the one that bolts to the carb. there was a LOT of crud in there..nice and clean now though
