Aah - all became clear when I went out to have a look in the rain (only had the van a week or so). The flap is no more - to be replaced by a mesh to help the engine cool (presumably). It all makes sense!

that question meks me wonder if you've ever dipped your oil

dip your oil, surely when the black stain on the drive is big enough it needs topping up

Mine's pretty much exactly the same as the pictures Mocki posted. Works a treat.

My oil filler tube looks much more central in the hole, so doesn't look like I have enough space, guess I'll just have to try.

What engine do you have?
Mines a 2ltr Aircooled and it just fits. Very tight.

It's a 1.9 water cooled and between the header/expansion tank, dipstick and oil filler spout there's not much space in the hole, may take a picture later and bung up for people to see.

And how would I go about moving the pipe then?
Really want to put plug in without cutting a hole but there doesn't seem to be space.

undo the clip holding it on the metal pipe... then you can adjust it a bit

So I might finally get round to doing this, anyone got any pictures of the cable routing around the engine bay and into the van living area, I'd like to do it as neat as possible and need to show the SO that it can be done neatly before I part with cash for parts and start getting the power tools out.
Anyone have a surface mout underthe van guess that could be neat as well, any reason for not doing it under?
