We got eaten alive on a campsite at Loch Lomond last week. It's not like the midge's anywhere else where you can just put up with them, they drove me absolutly mad, we tried repellent,the avon stuff but nothing really works. I only lasted a day inland and then headed back to the coast

Yeah they still allow camp fires in designated spots. Theres no lecky hookup but they have metered showers, 50p a pop.

Which site on Loch Lomond is it?

We toured Scotland in December/January for 3 weeks and had the misfortune of staying at that red squirrel campsite. You can wild camp for free all around that area so why you would want to stay their is beyond my way of thinking. The only reason we stayed at that over priced (i would say "pooh" hole but thats just his pota cabin showers that he charges you 50p to use, its just the rip off factor that gets on my nerves) place is that all the roads were closed due to 80 mph blizzards and he had the only trees for miles to shelter against

I thought the red squirrel fella was going to charge me for sporting a mild stubble for the night we sheltered their oh yeh, and he made no secret about the fact he was a racist too

I have just looked through our website and have copied what we thought of it.


The place was breathtaking but very scary at the same time with mountains either side of the valley full of snow and looked like it could avalanche if you farted. The campsite itself was a bit of a shed really and was done on the cheap that usually wouldn't bother us but the fact they charge top whack for the privilege of staying their took the pi$$ really. The three fingered bloke that ran the gaff was a right odd ball and chewed my ear off for around an hour on how the reason there were so many homosexuals in London was due to a hormone in the water they couldn't remove in the recycling process. He was clearly mad as a box of frogs so I had to stand their with a false grin on my face thinking to myself what we were going to have for dinner. To be honest I think his mum and sister were the same person to be honest and his old man was his brother, but who am I to judge. Besides his campsite had the only trees for miles and we would be needing them if the 80 mph blizzards were to arrive any time now. It felt like we were in the blare witch project especially as we were to only ones camping their and I slept with the table leg very close to hand.

still, we had a good night camping there and i have found memory of it. The owner still had'nt lost all his faculties in those days it seems. 80 mph blizzards are just made up stories to scare off sassenachs!
