Go on, turn the key again, I did yesterday finally and whaddya know, with the choke lever on the pump (I think) pulled back, started up in 0 degrees not bad at all after 2 months.
Test drive today, Oh what a saga, finished doing the rear brakes last night at 9-00pm and -? degrees with a torch on my lap - now they're a chinese puzzle if you don't put the bits together in the right order :D
But the turbo at least is not a bad one, just getting a modicum of blue smoke at constant revs now.

Constant smoke is unlikely to be stem seals, more likely rings or turbo.
Stem seals usually "puff" after a stretch idling, parked up or a duration of over run (long down hills)

Yup, however, i did find a bit of what looked like a stem seal and retainer in the oil pump strainer when changing the pump.

If one has disappeared completely?

I assumed it must have dropped down an oil return hole from head when beng built/rebuit/butchered but maybe I'm wrong, got spewed out and fell down of own accord - good old oil strainer I say. Rubber had gone hard, but pretty sure that's what it is, and the metal bit looked like valve collet, part thereof.

Harryman,
With finding part of a valve collet in the sump, I'd want to pull the rocker cover off and have a good look at the valve spring retainers! Scary

Yes, did that, and combined with hitting the governor in every gear (4100~4200) all seems in order. It's the seals that I really would like to check, head off jobbie though. And then that would tempt me to look at the bores and rings a bit closer and then.... tick, tick, £, £

Am only 'assuming' it was part of a collet and hoping if was, was dropped down oil drain hole accidentally and replaced - a bit Holmesesque, but didn't get my magnifying glass out or ask Watson to look further
