basically if the head stud(s) has broke/breaks then they wont come out easy.. in fact drilling them out is usually the only option.. (early case had tight clearance on the studs in the case) so that means engine out and swarf in the case, so the engine has to come apart.. so you want to fit new bearings which are (were) impossible to find for the early case....... and coupled to that the cyls prob will come off with the heads (stuck to them) you cant get the pistons back in the barrels... far to much effort for the early engines....

So does that mean that Elite will not do an exchange engine for the early model ,or can they adapt a later model to work with my coooling system etc?

If the engine is original and never been removed, stubborn nuts and bolts. Plenty of dirt and grease.

If the engine has been tampered with, you'll need new nuts and washers (sprung and plain) - possible a few new bolts.

With ours it needed a very good selection of tools too including a torque wrench to go down as far as 10nm and up to 254 (I have two covering these ranges). Allen key socket adapters, wire brushes etc. Also found the Dremel to be invaluable.

Also decent a sealant for reassembly (I used Hylamar) for the water and oil pipes.

Mine has taken 10 days so far and I haven't stopped until tonight, so you need lots of spare time.

Dunno.. dont ask directly, see what they ask you.. they might have the early parts, but I reckon even they will draw the line at the effort and time to drill out the broken studs etc... they may not be bothered as the heads and rods can be used, poss pistons and cyls etc too for another engine.. there is a certain value for parts in the engine..
