Interesting thread guys, having run 235/75 colway m/t,s for some time now with no adverse results. I have always run big tyres on various off road vehicles for some 20 years now and the following is true.
235,s on my van have given a softer ride, not helped off road but haven,t hindered much either. Most passers-by tell me it looks great, I love the looks myself and have found my 2.1 van reasonably economical usually does 25 mpg @ 2500 rpm with big wheels thats usually 60/65 mph so there are some benefits, I bought the wheels off ebay and by chance they had big tyres on.
Yes I have eased the front arches but not cut anything away, front tyres only caught with over a ton of building materials inside plus full rear seat and huge battery and spare wheel, hope this helps, by the way CHILLI I live just outside Tavistock next move this weekend is to try 10x15,s but I know I,ll need a lift kit for this

I took mine out today for a good long drive, I went on a bit of off roading too. The gearing is very high now & is not so easy to drive. 4th gear is high & any incline in the road results in some 3rd gear action.
It was ok off road, but again the gearing is a little high.
I did about 50 - 60 miles without breaking it too much too, so that's a bonus

Have now fitted 31x 10.50x15 still on 7x15 rims, gearing slightly higher than 235/75x15 as these are 30 ins. tall,my van is almost empty except for the usual off-road kit, hilift, spare wheel, tools, shovel and 4 individual seats. seems to pull o.k with standard 2.1 engine but have yet to try it in the mud! have fitted new springs spacers and shocks so at least it looks the part, guess I,ll just stand on the side and pose!

bit confused
busman says Standard 14 inch syncro wheels have a diameter of 66 centimeters. On a 14 inch you can put, without any problems, 205 80 r16 wheels which have a diameter of 72 centimeters. would 225 75, 7 x 16 MB fit on a 14" says they have a Cross-section of 75 would that 3cm make a difference ?

Std 14" 185r14 are 650mm diameter..
that tyre you suggest 225/75r16 is 744mm diameter 94mm taller..
205/80r16 is 734mm (84mm taller) and prob only fits coz its narrow..
in either case they are over 10% bigger and the gearing will suffer.
