Update!

After an initial panic, it was simply the linkage between the throttle cable and the carb that had seized. Covered it in WD40, had a cup of tea and then it worked fine. While I was there I gave the carb and linkage a good clean, and changed the filthy air filter just to make sure all was good.

I had the throttle pedal link (that bent rod) start popping out of the crank-arm under the floor recently... every time I took my foot off the pedal would pull the crank-arm out (muddy boots) - no go, bit of a show stopper! Fixed it, happened again as soon as I lifted off - no go!!

Makes you realise how totally dependent you are on that one link to be able to drive home normally - pedal, crank-mechanism & cable if you can't fix it, it's going to be at best a nuisance... at worst, a real pain somewhere down the line.

Got home OK, but made sure I fixed it before venturing out again.
Maybe we need a Seasonal Spot-Check section in the Wiki...

Well that won't have done any harm, either!
