the box is where all the elastic-trickery joins , the loom from the front joins the engine loom....... is it wet in there? it hinges upwards, and the bottom is a catch that often doesnt catch........

the leads look pretty dirty, is that the sealing gunk?

yup, there's sealing gunk everywhere
it leaves a waxy kind of film over everything

I'm sure you'll have already checked this but I'll mention it just in case because it was one of the first things that hit me when I looked at the photo of your engine; the lead from the dizzy to the plug in cylinder no.1 (top right of the photo), is it connected to the spark plug? Can't see it making much of the journey in the photo (but probably just hidden by all the hoses etc though). I've put two new sets of leads on our van recently and each set has had one or two leads that have a habit of coming loose. With the set we have on at the moment, it's the lead to plug no.1 that comes loose.

P.S. as your difficulties only occur when it's wet, it's probably nothing to do with this though!

Spray wd 40 insode the dizzy cap and wipe out with a bit of kitchen towel..

Earth on the gearbox and even the brown wires earthing on the left head.. (seen this one cause missfires), undo, clean well reassemble...

just done another 130 miles in the wet and she didn't miss a beat
i guess it's something i've sprayed

what year engine size model is yr van?

have you checked coil?

checked to see where wet in engine bay following a downpour?

no visable signs of water in engine bay
except head gasket leak
not really checked coil, all the leads/ wires are tight and it's all covered in ignition sealer


engine is a 1.9 DG
