Yes 1mm is advanced, most are ok at more than this but 1mm is safe, i prefer timing by ear.
I agree with Andy, timing by ear works, the engine will let you know if its happy, I have to run 1.2mm adv to componsate for AAZ pump opening AHU injectors !! but runs well.
