I've found some drivers think they have super powers if the have 4x4 instead of 2x4.. and a winch gives them super supreme powers.

In most cases when vehicles get stuck they are damaging the lanes and/or land. I've seen lanes used by 2wd vehilces for 30 years get torn up so bad only extreme 4 wheel drive vehicles could get through because of 4x4s using them when they were too wet and shouldn't have been driven on.

I'm fairly sure Al is asking about winches because he uses his syncro to extract firewood from pretty rough woodland at the request of the landowner, for his living.

So whether it will endow him with super powers or not, I think that useful info regarding the right one for the job would be of more use than getting off topic into what bad bad 4x4 drivers who should be lynched, are getting up to in the back lanes...

As previously mentioned, a hand winch/farm jack/waffle boards and a spade

are a lot cheaper and versatile than a powered winch. It's another story if it's

gonna be used for wood extraction though, but then why not get a vehicle

more suited to the job like a timber tractor

Cos driving round shropshire delivering wood in a tractor sounds a tad impractical don'tcha think?

The Watling might be nice but I see a couple of possible potential issues:
1/ The long hitch mount; doesn't look very strong, could get bent if doing much of a side angle pull, no ground clearance when installed.
2/ What keeps the winch drum 90* to winch line so line spools on evenly? With the ball hitch allowing the winch to swing and cable on one side or other of drum, the drum probably won't be at 90* angle to line and line will keep spooling up on that side. Could probably resolve issue with an 2 foot long 'A' frame on front of winch with a fairlead on tip to keep cable centered. Have done similar on past on winches.

Would be nice to see one in action.

If being used to pull in logs, could mount or rear only. Try and keep winch light enough to take off and on easily. Snatch block won't be needed, but keep in mind that electric winches doing steady pulls will heatup quite fast... even with small load.

Has anyone used one of the cheap (£25 inc postage) 5 tonne tirfor copies on ebay? I'm sure it's going to be a bit naff but for that price and a bit more ballast under the back seat but I thought it was worth a try...

I dont do much mud plugging so even if it won't pull the bus it might come in handy.

They work fine Dave. Used to use them all the time. Even carried one when I had power winch. Not the fastest/easiest way to get out, but you get out.

By the way, my van should be very similar to yours when I've finished it, half way through fitting a clean westy interior and got a reimo high top on order.... Shame the blue light will have to go, though it did nearly get me a fine today even though it was pretty well covered up... over zealous community support officer....
