If you dont mind me asking, how much was your recon?

It looks as though the AAZ turbo Andy mentioned is about £200 from Turboactive.

The new ones are so reasonable i would not bother with nasty recons.

After not answering my detailed email, i thought i would call them (again)
Just had a rather long winded battle with a telephone receptionist lady.

She was rather adamant that i need a model number for the Turbo, Suggested that i call VW to get the OEM number for the part i was looking for. As im not a trader i wouldnt imagine that would be too easy...?

Anyway, they werent into giving me any info at all by using the engine code, she couldnt tell me if it had a 4 bolt fitting or not, in fact, she couldnt tell me anything really. So she said that their chief engineer was going to call me back. Judging by their quick response to my email i could be waiting a while.

Anyone able to get me the OEM number for a 90-93 AAZ turbo?

according to vagcat AAZ wernt used until 92

Right, got a turbo from a chap on BY.

Really nice looking, totally unused recon unit (a Turboactive one funnily enough) which is an early AAZ one KKK 5314-970-7009.

Needed re-indexing as Andy said it would, no problem, re-indexed it.
All good.

Buuuuut, installed it, checked the oil feed pipe, primed it. still all good.

Fired up the engine, let it tick over for a few mins, got underneath to check all was good......AAARRGGHHH...its done exactly the same thing. Oil is being chucked down the exhaust.

Its definitely getting fed oil, no doubt about that, so the feed pipe is ok.
Assuming that the recon Turbo isnt a dud, the only thing i can think could be doing this is a blocked return perhaps, but this was a brand new item which i checked when i installed it.
I havnt checked it since, which i'm going to tomorrow just in case theres a blockage causing back pressure forcing oil out of the turbo seals, but it seems unlikely.

Exhaust manifold is dry, and it only ran for 5mins, so cant see it being long enough for that amount of oil to get past the rings anyhow.

The amount of oil would suggest that its definitely coming from the oil feed

Anyone got any thoughts before i set fire to the damn thing.

Right, so ive replaced the oil pump just in case it was the pressure release valve sticking.

But its still chucking the oil out of the turbo.
Going to try yet another turbo on it that Futbus is going to lend me, just to see if it does the same. Obviously, if that one doesnt do it, then i know its the turbo seals in the new recon unit to fault.
But i must admit, i find this unlikely, ive already tried two turbo's.

But if it isnt the turbo seals......then i might just commit suicide, ...ive sodding had enough of this.

Wasnt happy at all with the shape/route of the new return pipe so i changed the it for the JX one after modding it to fit, which slowed the dripping but didnt stop it totally.
Then i had an epiphany while thinking about what could be causing the turbo seals to leak, "perhaps the bolts needed torquing up a bit more after the reindexing"

So i gradually nipped them up with the engine running over the course of about 10 mins, and sure enough, the dripping slowed and then stopped completely. I'm one happy camper now!!

Somewhere back up this thread I promised to dig out the number on an early AAZ K14, indeed it is 5314-970-7009, I just called turboactive for one, they don't have any but are supplying me with a 5314-970-7014 which is 'the same'. I think by the same they mean it will fit and work. Will let you all know how it is when it arrives, £300 inc post and vat.

No worries, its all workout well in the end anyway.

I'm just in fingers crossed mode at the mo, hoping that the leak doesnt re-appear....

Hmmm, still need to keep my eye on it though i think.
Moved the van for the first time last night and i can see a bit of oil leaking from the crack in the downpipe. Im hoping this is just residual oil lurking in the system as it seems to have chucked a bit down, but it doesnt seem to be getting any worse
But still, keeping my fingers crossed...
