2 small extingushers one in the back and one in the front,plus a fire blanket near the cooker.
You never think that you will use them but i did in July!
Always check them and make sure they are in full working order luckily mine was!.

I havn't yet had a reply from Kidde who manufacture fire extinguisher but both the fire protection companies I contacted have replied.

The quotes are for a 2l AFFF Foam Fire Extinguisher which is ideal for use in the engine bay & can also be used inside a camper.

The first quote from Torquay is as follows:-

Retail Price: £23.95 + VAT = £28.14

20 No. £22.95 + VAT

30 No. £21.56 + VAT

50 No. £20.36 + VAT

The second quote from Manchester is as follows:-

Retail Price: £23.95 + VAT = £28.14

20 No. £17.00 + VAT = £19.97


In my opinion the second quote of £19.97 is excellent for a brand new
2l AFFF Spray Foam Extinguisher. It is fairly big at 2 litres but it is a proper extinguisher unlike some of the cheaper Mickey Mouse types. It is manufactured by Thomas Glover & meets B.S. EN 3 & has a 5 year warranty on all parts.

As previously posted we would depend on 80-90 express for delivery to individual members in order to keep costs down. (Postal costs would be high due to size/weight). I am thinking of getting two, one for the van & one for the kitchen at home.

The nearest i got to having a fire in the van was electrical. TBH, i think thats the most risk in my van.

The thought of making a right mess using a powder extinguisher actually stopped me using one earlier this year - fortunately i knew which wire to pull out to stop the smoke!

I think the moral is, dont mess around with electrics unless you're going to do a proper job every time. I normally do, but in this instance i was in a rush and didnt put a fuse inline. Idiot.

£20 is a bargain - count me in.

The main fire hazards in a camper are :-

1) Stove/grill ie. fat fire.

2) Engine bay ie. fractured fuel hose.

3) Electrickery

4) Smoking ie. in bed after consuming the demon drink.

5) Children with matches etc. ie. The firefighters nightmare.

6) Barbecue too near awning!

Through work I have seen the little foam ones used on a caravan after some sweet little child popped a firework inside and closed the door
To be fair it looked impressive as my colleague opened the door and aimed and squirted but not quite as impressive as the 20ft flames when it really got going , Sam came along and did the job properly and to be fair size is important count me in

ok have brought this thread back to life as i got a small extinghsuer and since having had a fire i need another one.
I have got a price for the foam one and dry powder and the local fire saftey guy recommends at least a 2kilo one.
I am worried about where to store this, as we go to germany/holland for nearly 2 weeks room in the van is at a premium. Would i be better gettin 2 smaller ones or just go for the bigger one?
you thoughts please people

We were trained that in a vehicle fire a 2kg extinguisher is the correct size because if the fire's still going after that's been exhausted you should be getting out anyhow.

thanks Ian, just out of interest do you have the 2kg one?and if so where do you store it?

I have a 1kg DP on the side of the cupboard behind the driver's seat and a 2ltr AFFF in the back next to the upright gas tank (by coincidence NOT in any fear). I also have an automatic 'Firetrace' extinguisher which loops along the leisure electrics, petrol lines and round the engine bay loom. If you have to buy one these are extremely expensive but normally put out fires before you realise you've even got one, mine came off a scrap landrover underground.

thanks very much for that Ian, im going round to look at the extingushers tomorrow so will see what he has.
He did say that the powder and the AFFF ones arent that differnt and advised the dry powder one over the AFFF one though

If I was the item on fire I know which I'd rather be extinguished with, you get a lot of powder out of a DP and it's not good to inhale or to have to clear up afterwards ..... believe me, been there, done that.

I service and sell fire extinguishers for a living. (unfortunaley :lol)

I have a 2kg dry powder extinguiser and fire blanket in the van to cover the gas hob/grill.
