If you don't camp in cold conditions, then butane will always prove to be better value as you can get more in the same size cylinder (eg 15Kg butane to 13 Kg propane). The butane cylinder will cost only about one pound more for the two extra kilos. Plus because butane burns hotter than propane you use less to do the same work.
The only advantage propane has over butane is that it continues to work perfectly at very low temperatures (-40c), whereas butane struggles at just above freezing point. So the ideal would be to use butane in the spring and summer, and change to propane in winter, remembering of course to change regulators. The vast majority of cookers and heaters will operate on either gas.
Because more people are now camping during the winter months some prefer to use propane at all times and save the hassle of changing over etc.,
