If the LDA (the thing on top of the pump) doesn`t pump extra fuel under boost you get no power (or quite a big lack of it) which sounds to be like THE problem. LDA is quite a common problem aparently, talking to those who fix `em for a living. (and quite expensive )

I would disconnect the breather pipe from the cam cover to the turbo inlet hose and bung the fitting on the turbo inlet pipe first. With the engine running you need to assess how much oil vapour it is breathing out of the top hose, if it`s a lot (and it does sound like it) then an engine rebuild/swap/ whatever is on the cards. Either way, the selling dealer should really be sorting the problem.

Ask Citizens Advice what your rights are. I`m pretty sure that a dealer has to stand behind any probs like that, especially so soon after selling. No such thing as "no warranty" nowadays. As for the brake "cock"-up, will they pass an MOT in that condition, because I presume it came with a full 12 months, which is another can of worms (who signed the MOT? similar name maybe?)

About the breather, is this the rubber pipe that runs from where the oil cap should be on the rocker cover down to the larger plastic pipe that runs from the air cleaner to the turbo? If so, it is where this rubber pipe attaches to the air cleaner pipe where it is broken, and when the engine is running, black oil leaks from this break.

As for this unit on top of the engine that should give some fuel for boost, is there any way of testing it? (apart from getting the wife to floor the van up a hill with me hanging over the back seat).

ELVIS - the gear lever is fixed and my brake shoes are not binding.

The pipe you describe is the one, it`s the engine breather, any oil fumes are supposed to get burnt with the inlet air. Disconnect it and bung / tape up the plastic inlet pipe (the expensive one )

If a lot of oil is being blown out of the rubber hose from the top of the motor, then yes, the motor is past its best / knackered/ on its last legs/ about to expire*
*delete as appropriate

Dunno how to test the LDA but if it`s leaking diesel from inside it, it`s a fair bet it`s knackered.

you might have a fixed gear shifter and brakes - still got a potentially very fecked and very expensive engine ! IMHO dunno why your asking why/how to fix it and throwing YOUR money at it , i'd be looking at gripping the fella , metaphorically or not

Ah ha!

After some testing today, found the following:

1. Took breather off top of engine and ran engine, just a bit of exhaust type fumes from rockercover plastic gizmo and no oil, guessed that looks ok.

2. Removed all pipes to turbo, replaced large plastic one from air box with newbe from VW, confirm turbo is new. Re-tightened all pipes.

3. One for ELVIS - brakes OK.

4. Revved engine, no action from actuator (bit on top of throttle housing)
mr Brown appeared, revved his engine and his actuator moved.

5. I'm off to do the rounds of my local scrappy's tomorrow morning to find a diesel golf / passat and purchase another actuator. (plenty of action from the vacuum tube, so hope this is the problem).

My van now has power!! Infact why people say that the 1.6td is under powered beats me!

I have disconected the LDA wedged open the connecting coupling and there is power!! The Turbo sings and the van pulls through all the gears VERY well.

All i need now is a new LDA, Where can i get one??

I have spoken to various 'specialists' and the phone goes quiet when i describe the part i am after. Nobody seems to know this part. I have a part no. from a German web site, but have had no reply from them via e-mail yet. Any ideas??

I think I have the same problem as yours. Turbo is new on my van, but I can feel there is not so much power... Last day I disconnected the pipe from the inlet manifold and I was blowing into the pipe, the LDA was working pushing the lever

You disconnected the LDA from the coupling? Located on the ball-joint on the lever?

Yes disconnected the coupling at the ball connection, pushed the coupling to the 'open' position (it will stay there) and the van is totally different to drive, feels light and responsive, in fact 'low power' would never cross my mind.

I have tried main dealers but it is a discontinued part. I have a BOSCH number but that is also a dicontinued part!!

I have found a German company who seem to have them at 149 euros, but i cannot get hold of them, although i only e-mailed last Thursday.

Have you tried Baxter, may be able to source one for you, they seem to be a common problem, mine looks to be a new one on my `van.

A mate of mine bought this from Germany a week ago, arrived the other day and he has now fitted it, he is absolutly over the moon with the difference
