ahh, shep. which petrol will p1ss on a 1.9tdi??? and do 40mpg, run on bio diesel or chip fat???

and have the reliabilty of a train, hgv, barge, bus, or anything else that needs a good strong reliable motor, that vw are still churning out by the million each year(theyre in everything)

they must think diesels rock too!! as well as scania, volvo, merc, iveco, man, wmpte, railtrack. did i miss anyone? (oh.....sorry daf)!!

If you notice i choose my words VERY carefully! so if you read through my post you will see that i stated petrol's will p**s on any STANDARD Diesel engine and as far as i know the 1.9TD was NOT a standard fitment to our vans.
If we are talking conversions we could bring up the Scooby vans people have done which i'm sure you would agree will have the beating of even the mighty 1.9td.
I think it's a case of what you prefer rather than a definitive 'these Engines are the best'.

I just read the advice frompeasant- which I found invaluable and I would endorse everything he has said about he 1.6TD- Mine is a hightop and yes the 1.6TD isvery good but it is badly hit by the hills - on the level it can leep up ok and it will do long runs but on the hills and big 12% gradients it is at a disadvantage - that is it's real downside - watch for overheating - I ahd mine at 1900rpm on a graident inside a tunnel in Norway - the T25 was only moving - I had to keep it in second to avoid over-reving and overheating - it made it but only just.

Just gone over to a diesel having probs with current 1 BUT...
Replacement engine are easier to get hold of and cheaper if you just wanted to pop one in and run it (im going to rebuild) and they seem a lot stronger, i was always worried bout when the petrol would blow up again although it never should as it was looked after properly!
And also i now love the mpg of the diesel!
