Guages and flashing lights

Post by MarieJ »

Having checked the low pressure gauge we found that the old black one read 2 G and stopped the light flashing, but the new black one was a higher bar rating and made the oil light flash. We have now swapped it for a brown 0.15 - 4.5 bar gauge as advised by the GSF man. He wasn't able to say if this was the correct one for a 1.9 non turbo diesel, but as the oil ligh is no longer flashing I assume the problem is fixed. I'm really grateful for you sharing your knowlege Harry, dont know what I would have done otherwise. Looks like the old van will get to see Ireland one more time. Do you think we should check the DOPWS wiring at the back of the dash as advised in the link or just leave well alone?
all the best MJ

I don't know much about engines but have been studying the Wiki recently in preparation for attempting my first oil change. Anyway, in the Wiki I noticed that some makes of oil filters have been known to cause problems but other makes are recommended:

Do you know what make of filter your husband fitted? 15-40 is the recommended grade of oil for our engine, is it the same for yours?

Apologies if I'm doing that egg sucking thing that Harry mentioned in his far more useful sounding posts!

Sounds like you've done what you can, so go with that, sure all will be well, leave dash alone unless things start buzzing flashing,

The correct part nos. for a 1Y engine (1.9 N/A, non turbo)

Low pressure, back of head:

028 919 081 D (.25 bar, BLUE)

High pressure (Oil filter housing)

068 919 081 A (.9 bar, GREY)

So BLACK is too high for the HP one, at 1.4 bar, so whilst may be OK and not cause a buzz over 2,000 rpm, if it is BLACK you've got and it buzzes when oil hot and thinner, just try disconnecting it*... the LP one, might need shorting out to earth if it causes flashing, or just ignore it.

Or blipping it momentarily above 2,000 rpm with clutch depressed usually turns it off for a while !

Hope I'm right but Happy Days Away anyway :)

Good point Tony,

15W40

I even used GSF 20-50 diesel oil (blue bottle, £5/5 litres)) in a similar 1.9 engine for quite a mileage, changing it frequently, and that definitely helped oil pressure...

Filters: Currently using the shorter but fatter T4 filter (MANN) from GSF, less overhang and weight on filter housing when you've got both the VW heat exchanger sandwich and an oil cooler plate between the two...

Hi tony MJ's computer illiterate and slighty sozzled husband here. I have been using the bog standard oil and filter in my current engine for the last 3 years, usually go for the mid range price wise ie not kwik save ultra thin cheap stuff. Anyhow changing oil I woul recommend the following:
losen sump bolt a little prior to heating up engine, run engine for ten mins or so, have a big nice old cardboard sheet underneath van. Slowly release sump bolt and have one of those flat oil catchers handy. The oil flows out at a fair pace. Have an old bolt the same size as sump bolt handy to plug sump (should you drop sump bolt as I have done). Use a oil filter wrench to remove oil filter. When refitting filter fil it up and smear a little oil on the rubber seal, tighten it by hand. Buy yourself a nice big funnel with a wire gauaze filter and wack in the oil. I have an old bucket to put the used filter and erm cant think of the word, ah yes funnel in. afterwards. I know that my old disel takes 4 1/2 litres of oil, not sure what a petrtol engine takes. Anyhow last tip is to wear some monkey surgeon gloves. Please excuse the spelling mistakes and typos, this is why the wife does the posts on here and i get dirty underneath said van, please feel welcome to correct me people. I am still celebrating my van being ready to undertake another epic journey.
Bye
