first time mrs iguana drove the van she said she could hear a horrible clattering noise coming from the back?............it was the diesel engine!!

There is always a bit of play in the driveline, there has to be some backlash or it would eat itself.. whether its too much is debatable..
mine makes a ringing/rattle if I drop too low on the rpm in a given gear.. and everything is pretty ok... its the nature of the beast.. drive with more rpm/less load.. if nothing is amiss.. they prob never did it when new, but unless you are prepared to renew everything, then you cannot eliminate all wear... only reduce it.. add up all the play in CV joints too and there is a hell of a lot of movement...

True Simon, really, really good ones don't seem to do it, job to flog when new if they did I imagine, be back in workshop as quick as a blink udner warranty

Right well today is going to be a van day for me so Im going to change the gearbox oil and see if that makes any difference to the stiff change. As for the rattling, Ill see what I can do but Im a bit stumped. Ive also to replace the brake pads today.

While you're down there, drop the selector arm ball joint down, take the 13mm nut off the lever onto the splines (only goes back one way so no worries) and see if the sliding joint is full of sticky grease, ditto ball joint/cup...
