I’m in Clevedon and Moores motor cars are a good air cooled vw specialist here - let me know if you want their number- usually very busy but may book you in sooner due to the issue you have

Have you changed your fuel pump recently? Can you check the pressure?
Hi, I did change the fuel pump when we broke down. First thing I did. I just looked and there wasn't much fuel in pipe to the carb to be honest. Only a bit at the bottom of pipe. I just assumed gravity had bought it back.

I was thinking you might have too much fuel pressure if the float and needle valve weren’t faulty?

Ahh I see, potentially!

I bought an inline dial type pressure gauge for the fuel flow that you “plumb” in the fuel line - I believe you are looking for 2-3 bar but that should probably be checked! It sounds like you have other issues as well as the fuel unless they have been resolved now?

OK great thank you. Well when it broke down, the AA guy thought it was just the distributor cap, but pretty much all the ignition system has been changed. Apart from some kind of idle controller.
I think it's got to be fuel related.

Also, another thing to add, it was popping and banging on the overrun very badly beforehand. And has done it for a while. Could see the glow in the exhaust if you followed it.
The exhaust is also completely rusted through.

Slight change in my previous suggestion - could be an an air leak between the carb and manifold and also your timing could be out.
Check all the nuts are tight around the carb (sometimes even spraying around there won’t show a change in revs unless your bang on it) and then double check the timing.

Excellent suggestion as that was a part that was changed recently.
Will check timing for sure. What could cause the timing to essentially jump? Or suddenly change? I've check that the distributor is in the same orientation as it was etc.

I’m not 100% sure and I’m sure someone will be able to confirm better than me, but if it’s proper worn then it can have an effect I think.
That said I see that you’ve changed yours, so if the timing has all been set since the change I wouldn’t worry about doing it again, unless for peace of mind - have a check of those bolts and report back.
