So... I decided to do the engine conversion, I've been speaking with Jamie at J's Garage since December, but he's finding it difficult to find a donor car in his area.

I had a look on autotrader a few times, but even doing a national search I also couldn't find anything.

Could you guys please advise where you'd go about find a donor car, what models and years I should be looking for?

And if you have any leads please let me know.

I would always opt for any of the engine codes 1Z, AHU, AFN.
It is important to source a transverse mounted engine, as the longitudinal mounted (Passat B5, A4, A6) have a different block.
 

Just a note, if you change the engine to non original you may not get historic status when it’s 40 yrs old. If you are happy to keep paying road tax and getting it mot’d go right ahead. If you are then I’d suggest keeping it original spec
