Picture of early sliding door catch for reference.

A good 10mm gap between catch and door card.
Spring looks different, been like this on mine for last 15 years. Never had to touch it...... yet!

The photos from both vans with upholstered door card shows that the door cards are thicker than the originals, the original card should sit in to the shallow recess of the door, the original factory vinyl is very thin so when it wraps around the edge of the card it doesnt make the overall size of the card that much bigger, other materials and more foam will increase the size and stop the card sitting flat in to the door.

job done!
just punched the stopper back in a bit, it was a bit twisted. nothing wrong with the door card or door position, but ive got some good clearance now from the latch hook. thanks to everyone for chiming in!
the late door latch is diofferent, has a hole in the latch arm for the spring like this- (probably a differnt spring too)

When in doubt, give it a clout
Pretty sure I have a late catch off the syncro on the bodycut I saved for the roller channel..

Glad you got it sorted, mine next (after the running)
Seal is missing and it's way out of line with the body, it also fell off its runner when my lad shut it too vigorously
