Thats very kind of you but at the moment i feel nervous about driving it around the block let alone Nottingham.
Does yours smoke at all?

This problem has been dealt with previously here . I have had exactly this problem myself with a CS engine, and it was a loose valve seat. It doesn't make any difference whether your cylinder head has hydraulic or solid lifters, it can still have this problem. Seems it is more common than I thought.

As you can see from the other thread, I was accused of an "esoteric flight of fancy" amongst other things. It wasn't. I have the tee shirt.

Overfilled with oil was the fault in that thread.

I want to do a compression test on the engine via the injector positions, if i disconnect the shut of valve do you know if i will have problems on restarting the engine once done ie air, re-prime?
How would you know if the diesel pump was knackered/worn, what are the tell tail signs are there any tests that you can do ?
 

I have now completed a compression test all four cylinders were good, however taking the injectors out to complete the test one injector (no 4) was very black, sooty and tarred i had to heat it to remove the nozzle, all nozzles are brand new any idea what this could be.
I have also noticed air bubbles in the diesel input to pump so i plan to change the filter and pipework, could the air in the pipe cause the problem with the injector.
After cleaning the injector re-started the van which went into a lovely idle, when i rev immediately after starting it goes into a chug a chug for about 30 seconds then falls back into a nice idle, once the engine is warm all OK.
Like i said before how would I know if its the pump????????
 

I think you have a "dropped valve seat" on one of your exhaust valves. That's the one with the sooty injector.
If you would measure the valve clearances and list them on here, I will be able to confirm if this is the case or not.
A cold compression test will not show up this problem, as it doesn't reveal itself until you heat up the valve stem (ie by revving the engine)
You can measure the valve clearances with hydraulic tappets by leaving the engine overnight, then gently levering the buckets downwards for a few minutes. It doesn't need accurate measurement, just whether the clearance exceeds 5 thou or not. I think you may find one of the clearances is pretty much zero, and the other seven are greater than 5 thou.
