Cheers Smiffo you've been amazing. will start a new post with a video as I'm not keen on pulling the engine out again. I did keep all the parts from the old engine including clutch and flywheel so if I need to I can replace but I'd rather not just now.

No problem whatsoever. Many here bailed me out many times. I’m merely paying it forward
If it is the bush, it is only a starter out job.
The brass bushing is pennies too.
Best to get some other eyes on what’s happening first and foremost though.

Good work, Smiffo.
There doesnt seem to be any mounting holes for the distribution tower? Has it rusted away in that area?
Just a precaution though. The pipe from distribution to right head has two versions. 251 121 130 A and B type. Brickwerks sells both. They are about a fiver each. Ask me how l know!

I guess as it was an early van with early cooling system, it probably never had the holes.
Easy drill out job though.
Nice spot on the hose Stu.

Yeah the Towers have an early, an early late and a late late. I too found that out.

And an auto version of each I think

Rereading its an 84 van. So no predrilled holes for tower. Only 85/86 onwards.
Touche!

Oh yes! With different pipes for auto cooler too.

Hi Guys,
Just a quick heads up. I ordered all the parts as detailed by Smiffo from Brickwerks and they arrive tomorrow as soon as I get them all fitted and up and running I'll let you know the outcome of all your good work.

Morning all, well all the hoses are now in place and took the leap to pull the engine out again to replace the flywheel and starter bush as suggested. the juddering cranking has gone now so all to the good. I know I could have pulled the bush with the engine in place but there were iron fillings visible in the starter opening so as I had a spare flywheel... So got it all up and running yesterday and ran a rad flush through it to just make sure of things. Obviously I have a few questions to ask

. on my old engine it had only one wire on the temp sensor, this has two could anybody tell me where these two wires go to please? just to make sure I've got the plumbing right can I check that the large hose coming out from the top of the thermostat housing goes to the top hose of the rad and the bottom hose returns back to the bottom of the distribution tower? after draining down the system to clear out the rad flush debris I started it up again and it ran for a minute then cut out with no petrol from the pump. half a tank of petrol and can be sucked up to the pump I can't believe that the pump has just packed up although it is an unknown quantity being that it came with the second hand engine but surely I can't be that unlucky?? thanks as always for your time and sorry for the long post

Well done on progress so far!!
Yes, the hose that goes to the top of the thermostat housing is the return from the radiator, and crosses over to the long pipe running rear to front under the van. That's the return and goes on the bottom of the radiator.
The temp sensor has one live, and an earth. I forget the colour without checking, but I think it's one Yellow/Red, and one Brown.
The Brown needs to be earthed, the Yellow/Red ( if that is the correct colour ) goes to the black plastic box in the engine bay, which then plugs into the van wiring loom to the front of the van.
If I am wrong on anything on that sensor, someone will correct me, or I can go out and physically check mine for you if nobody agrees or corrects me.

Just clarifying... "Two wires"
Two wires or two sets of wires.?
I presume the younger engine came from an injection set up.
Assuming two sets of wires.......
On these there are two temp sensors.
One for the gauge on the dash
And Temp Sensor II (2) is for the injection ECU.
Sensor 1 for the gauge is -
Yellow / red = sensor to gauge.
Brown = sensor to ground
Sensor 2 for the injection ECU is
Grey = sensor to ECU
Brown / blue = sensor to ground
If you are still running the carb, you can ignore Sensor 2.
Just leave it unplugged - (disconnect the loom plug).

Good point - well spotted on possibility of second temp sensor :ok

Thanks to both for your replies. it isn't an injection set up it came with pierburg carb that said there are two sensors mounted in the thermostat housing one facing forward which has the wiring you've stated white/red and brown and there is another facing to the left of the van. I'd assumed this to be a thermoswitch for the fan but know that there is a sensor in the radiator for that. Not knowing the engines history is it possible that it was an injected engine and has been converted to carb prior to us getting it? if so it has certainly led a chequered life. thanks also for the hose routing I do have them the wrong way round the hose from the stat housing is going to the top hose so I'll need to swap those over which may account for it getting hot quicker than expected. I have one more hose to get which is on the right hand side head going to the distributor tower but I've managed to cobble one together for the time being for the purposes of getting the thing to run up properly. thanks again guys much appreciated as always
