Thanks for the replies. I see, so if I spray the lubricant into that vent with the fan on as previously mentioned, it may work it's way into the fan. Worth a try, thank you.
Yeah , pull the plastic mesh off for better spray access
Magic, thank you.

Well, I've tried this as I had a start-the-van-up-for-half-an-hour-as it's-not-been-run-for-a-while day, and sprayed WD-40 through the inlet with the fan running. Not sure that it's had much effect, but I was happy to give it a go. Thanks again.

If it does work, it is a very temporary solution. So be prepared for a dash rip out in the near future.
I did read on here, many moons ago, a forum member fitted a small pipe to drip feed oil to the bearing after fitting a new blower.
I've changed three to date, in three different campers, so set aside a long, sunny day in May or June.
My opinion is the fan needs running regularly to prevent seizing. The same with a propex heater or the 3 way fridge. Run 'em up on a regular basis.

As maxstu says, the only real solution is to take the dash out and replace the fan from the heater box.
Not a difficult job, just awkward.

Be prepared for some stuck screws near the windscreen, no amount of lubricants has managed to undo two of mine who refuse to budge. No blower motor for several years now.

Heater-box-out can be such a laborius pain on most cars I think, done it on a Capri, but that only needed the lower dash removing so not too bad, but still a job many dread. Such a pity that on the Camper the whole top dash has to come out. The aforementioned 'lubrication tube' is a great idea, I know someone who attaches a small hose to reach a Capri heater motor and fires WD-40 down it to keep it maintained. Although as said, WD-40 can be temporary, if you can keep doing it then the temporary-ness repeats and it can live on! I'd like to get a tube to the Camper motor, but obviously you just can't even see it.

I found with the screws is to get a really good fitting screwdriver and put a socket spanner on the end, push the hell out of the end of the screwdriver to hold it on the screw and work the spanner left and right a bit til it shifts. Make sure you have the spanner towards the left of the van so you don't put it through your windscreen!

That's what worries me, I wish I was aware of this issue when I last got my windscreen replaced. I can get a purchase but no movement, left plus gas soaking in the area for months, but still no movement. Windscreen clears ok anyway so not a visibility issue but do miss the gentle heat normally generated.

I can get a purchase but no rotation, will try again when weather gets warmer, or use a heat gun (only joking).

On the US forums there is a long thread on lubricating the shaft in situ
https://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewt ... p?t=395661
However the brushes are usually worn after 30+yrs of running so worth changing the motor

Impact driver (the type you hit on the end with a hammer) with a 12" long socket extension holding the cross head bit onto the screw head. Bam bam got all mine out straight away

One of the best value tools. Hugely effective and pretty cheap.
