All is not lost - you now have nice clean earth points!!
Be assured, there will be people reading this and will recall a scenario they talked themselves into a root cause of an issue, that turned out to be something simple and obvious. ( I know I've done it. )
Pencil it in as the pressure from the deadline for your hols, then go enjoy the trip

by swapping the whole headlight would I not have ruled that out? I thought the only problem left would be the bulbs as that's the only difference between the two?
If it does turn out to be the bulbs at least I now know that crowns exist and that rust hasn't eaten away the front of the van yet!

True. But you didnt tell whether initial good lamp failed or not when plugged into other side.
Anyhow. Happy hols...and get a set of bulbs from Halfords. Are they H4's? Or the goldfish bowl style ones?

They are the h4 ones, going to swap all the bulbs while I'm there and see if I can get some brighter ones

Well happy ending all lights working and got the retest in a hour, knowing my luck it will conk out again on the drive there!
