If you do it yourself you still need to dispose of what is considered contaminated fuel, maybe worth contacting various agencies who deal with this for the best price.

Don't take the chance, Don. If you feel uneasy about running contaminated petrol in your Golf then call a specialist firm to pump out fuel tank.
For the record though.....taken from a misfuelling company website.......

Do Diesel & Petrol Mix?

If you have mixed fuel in your vehicle, do not think that there is a more significant or lower portion of either fuel at the bottom where it feeds into the pump.

Petrol weighs 737.22 grams per ltr
Diesel weighs 840 grams per ltr

When diesel and petrol mix they combine and cannot be parted by taking fuel off the top or bottom. When you put the wrong fuel in a vehicle, it mixes in no distinct order; some may state that the diesel will sink to the bottom or the petrol will float to the top, this is certainly not the case.

We have had mixed fuel tested various times, and samples were taken from the top and bottom of our storage tanks after they had sat for a period of weeks, the mixed fuel taken from the top has more petrol in it, but still contains diesel. The mixed fuel removed from the bottom contains more diesel but again still has petrol in it.

Latest. Will drain tank and dispose of fuel....Problem
Where/how do you dispose of.
Local Authority have no facilities, not even within 30 odd miles. Fuel Disposal firms are not interested in small amounts'
Have emailed Fire Brigade to see if they can help/suggest something.
Conclusions so far...... don't put the wrong fuel in your tank.
PS. So far no response from any 'we will come and empty your tank' firms after I tell them there is no contaminated fuel in the system and it is just the tank that needs emptying ie no flushing required.
 

Maybe speak to your local garage they'll be able to put it in with their waste oil which will go off to be recycled anyway. 

Is there a car scrapyard or any scrapyard nearby that dispose of vehicles, they have to remove fuel from the tanks before they crush them, otherwise they explode, they must have a facility for it.

Thought of that and taking it to our L A 'tip' and putting it in the waste engine oil container but was not sure. No good asking the staff they would just say 'oil only'.

Your idle is lean. If you richen it slightly (ideally around 0.4%) your burn will be more complete and HC should fall quite a lot (around 150-250ppm is v good, and lower is achievable).

As for disposing of fuel, know anyone with a petrol lawnmower?

A lawnmower engine (or strimmer, chainsaw etc) will run on any old petrol, even with a big dollop of diesel in it. It'll smoke a bit, but it'll still cut your grass.

I remember my Dad talking about how , during wartime petrol rationing he used to add some paraffin  to his Austin 7  tank of petrol to make it go a bit further.

Plenty of folk will take the mix off your hands, if local I would have.

Anyone running veg/bio in their old school diesel will probably have read up at some point of the benefit of adding a little petrol to their mix in winter months, so using your mix would probably pose no real problem.

I misfuelled my classic diesel truck last year, so had 60 litres of 50/50 unleaded/diesel to deal with. I Used a fishtank aerator stone to bubble air through the mix for several days. Most of the petrol evaporated off leaving 35 litres of pretty much neat diesel which I used at 10% in various vehicles every time we filled up.

Not very eco friendly, but then neither is disposing of 60 litres of contaminated fuel.

Update. Diesel/petrol mix syphoned out. About 6 galls. There was only about 6/7 in there. Have not fired up yet as have not had chance to put some petrol in.
Local fire brigade said contact Local  Authority for disposal help. They have not even replied. Another friend said put it in waste oil tank at the 'local tip'. Not all at once. He has visited a waste oil plant and watched the recycling process and said it will not make any difference to them as to what is mixed with the oil.
Will also try using small amount of my 'mixture' when I put petrol in.

By my reckoning if you put about £30 of diesel in in that’s around 5 gallon.
So the mix you have drained off is probably much more diesel than petrol.

Personally I’d say it would be better used/given/sold to someone with an old school diesel that is happy to Chuck in a gallon with each fill up.
