Is that CHF, euros, or £??? And that was just to fit it?? How much was the engine?
For that money I'd have built you one, brought it out to Switzerland, fitted it, and had change to pay for the quarantine hotel on the way home!

Swiss francs. 5.5 to fit and 1.8 for a second hand (SP) engine - had to stick to an SP.
I would have done it myself, but I don’t have anywhere to work on it. Our garage is normal size, and this is a high roof Westfalia. We keep it in a barn when not using it, but can’t work on it there.

That's about £4300 to fit according to googles converter and £1400 for the engine Eeeshhh, could buy a nice van for that money.

Saw one advertised for 50k just before Christmas
The problem you would have is selling them... They don't trust anything non-Swiss. I was quoted 9-10k to rebuild an SP here, and they said anything rebuilt in England would be ""pooh"".

They wouldn't be wrong. Most are recycled, a few are done well.
£5.6k is knocking on 2.5 money.
I woild have built a stealth 2.1 DJ inside the SP case and enjoyed a good bit more performance.

In the UK I would have thrown a subaru engine in it immediately...
I am a visitor here, and we may eventually want to apply for a longer permit/citizenship.
They have long memories here and breaking the rules is a big thing. When you apply for a passport, you have to be approved by your local community. It is even put in the paper so if anybody holds a grudge they can make a comment about your suitability.

32 hours labour to change the engine. 4300-450 divide by 120

Let get some prespective here. Switzerland is a fabulously wealthy country with a very high standard of living. Even minimum wage is twice (l think) the UK's. So naturally everything costs more to buy and do. Including cost of living, property and transport.
In it's own world it works very efficiently.
It is a bit like the waiter we started talking to in Turkey 1983. He asked how much for a pack of Marlboro cigarettes in UK? I told him. He jumped back and said he will stay in Turkey now.

Average salary (yes, average) in my canton is 100k CHF.
Everything is more here.
Beef is 100chf per kg, labour is 80-100CHF an hour for gardeners - the list goes on.
It takes a long time to get used to it, and I still haven't completely. But I am trying...
I am very lucky to have a clever wife who has a nice job.
Anyway. I have a new (old) engine! and it works. Yay!
Been out for another drive this morning and it all feels fine. Pulls much better from lower revs, and that clutch is lovely (as it bloody well should be).
Off to Lugano for the weekend.
