New set of spark plugs, new rotor arm (non limiting), new distributor cap, new air and fuel filters. Strip carb and clean crap out of it. A service to start with basically. No point in putting another carb on without getting the basics right first

There's no point doing loads of ( perhaps good) stuff if the symptoms / diagnosis isn't complete.

I too suspected idle jet at first but the description of the symptoms so far doesn't support that, just waiting for the OP to respond to my latest question.

E D I T. - just seen the latest response, I missed that one come in

If the engine will not idle when cold then it's the cold start enrichment / fast idle that's the problem.

I'm sure there are threads on here explaining the problems that arise with them and the fixes

Here we go, it's a common problem:

A lot of people find the James Akers videos very useful.............. some reading to do as well as it could be electrical, physical or adjustment.

I'll step back and let those with the detailed experience of 2e3 carbs provide more specific advice, neither of my vans have one.

He can take it out, I'll bet it still won't idle when cold

Also worth checking the state of the fuel filters, in line from tank and cone filter in inlet to carb. Its worth considering stripping down and cleaning the carb yourself with a rebuild kit. James' videos are good and it's just methodical work, I've done it and my bus runs better. I'd do this first rather than just replacing the carb.

I'm with 937carrrera on this one. if it was the idle jet then engine temp makes no difference it would stall when slowing to that jet.

Can you move the choke flap freely? or does it feel connected to something...I suspect the little plastic connector has broken so not
engaging the choke.

The pierburg has a cold idle speed mechanism that keeps the engine speed up at idle whilst it warms up.
Yours isn't working, or has become mal adjusted.
Haynes has a few ideas as to setting up the choke and fast idle

Morning, just had my carb reconditioned by Bromyard, you won’t find a more knowledgeable or nicer bloke anywhere. It’s at least a 3 week wait to get your carb done at the moment but (I think) you can get reconditioned ones and send yours in.
Hope that helps & good luck

Yes that certainly would take the carburettor out of the equation.
Thanks for the reminder. :ok
All to often it's not the actual carburettor but something attached to it...or not, as a chap I recall found out.

Stalling at junctions is a common carb issue on the 1.9 water-cooled models, especially if it hasn’t been cleaned or tuned in a while. If you're not comfortable doing the service yourself (which is totally fair — carbs can be fiddly), it’s smart to look for a specialist who knows these engines inside out.
Since you're in Wales and need same-day turnaround, I’d recommend searching for local VW air-cooled/water-cooled specialists — many classic VW garages still service T25s and might have experience with your exact setup. Some even keep refurbished carb units in stock for swap-over jobs, which could save time.
In the meantime, you might want to double-check for vacuum leaks or loose connections around the carb — even a cracked hose can cause rough idling and stalling.
Hopefully someone local to you can chime in with a trusted garage — but you’re on the right track by asking early before it leaves you stranded. Let us know how you get on!

Hopefully he's sorted by now. Original post was put up in 2019.

That is an obvious AI posting - it even puts a link to say so. Therefore there is no point replying to it - the post has already been reported but hasn't been taken down yet.
