Thanks all
Gearbox is too heavy for the likes of this old chap, even with divine intervention :D
So we're booked into a garage.
Needs must..

After the gearbox started getting worse and crunching in and out of gears I had a quick look under the van to see if I'd lost oil.
No..
Turns out there's nowt wrong with the gearbox, just some fool who forgot to tighten up the 4 bolts when fitting the engine.
It loosened enough to affect disengagement.

Stop laughing.

As I said ... 4 bolts! ;)

Glad you got it fixed :)

Sounds reminiscent of my recent "experience" when the depressing prospect of removing the dash to change the wiper motor was removed when, after tracking the fault back to an open circuit at the motor, I stuck my head up under the nether regions of the glove box and discovered that the motor connector had somehow come off the motor.
:D

Remember, we are laughing with you, not at you :-)

If I can highjack this thread, I am having the same issue but can not get to the bottom of it.

Rebuilt engine fitted with new flywheel and clutch, always crunching into reverse since. The guy who rebuilt it suggested slave cylinder which was leaking, replaced this, no better...
Replaced master cylinder and clutch pedal clevis pin, bled up ok, no better....
I have full travel of the actuating rod on the side of the gearbox so guess it's the new release bearing/clutch/flywheel???

Should have also said, it's a 4 speed DG

From experience.
Crunchy reluctant gears when the engine is on is a result of the spigot shaft still being turned.
This could be the clutch not releasing fully
It could be the spigot bearing collapsing/worn gripping the shaft.
Or in my case the bellhousing not fully home and throwing all the geometry out.
I had to be creeping forward to achieve a smooth 1st and second.
And switch the engine off to engage reverse.

I changed all the selector rod bushes, and that caused utter mayhem, could not select rev, 1st and third with the engine off, until further faffing and ajustments.

I bought a five speed gearbox to replace what I thought was a shagged box.
You're welcome to use it/borrow it untill you can find another.
Its a petrol ASM box
It'll work as a 4 speed.
But you better check the ratios

Thanks Kev

I'm not sure where to go with this, it was fine before it had the engine rebuild including a new clutch and flywheel so my initial thought is to take it back to the guy who did the work.

I'm not using the van at the moment due to several issues all happening at the same time:
1.Clutch not releasing fully
2.Oil light not working
3.Temperature gauge reading very high
4.Constant stubborn hesitation

Thanks for the offer of the gearbox though, very kind. I'm probably going to just leave it with the guy who built the engine if I have covered all the obvious stuff...

Ok
I just got rid of my hesitation.
It was a blocked transfer jet.
The accelerator pump wasn't pumping enough either when I pressed the accelerator.
Followed CJH post and fixed it

I had the same but I found there was a two tier thing to my gears, for reasons unknown.

There seems to be a tier that will get 1 -5, but then there seems to be a second 'deep' area just below that is reserved for reverse..

Just feels a bit lower than that required for the rest of the gears.

Not at all sure if its how this is meant to work but never miss reverse now.

If I could get it to change from 5th to 4th though when coming down the box (ooooer missus!!) I would be a happy man.

Will change to any other gear but not 5th to 4th, go figure
